PAPER CLIP Filed June 419. 192.4
Patented Dec. 15, 1925,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAPER cLI-P.
vApplication filed June 19, 1924. Serial No. 720,940.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK HOWARD ROB: INSON, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brea, county of Orange, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper Clips, of which the following isa specification.
This invention has to do with a paper clip, and it is an object of the invention to provide a simple, effective and improved device of this character.
The present invention has particular reference to a wire paper clip useful for sec111ring and clipping together papers, or the li e.
It is a particular object of this invention to provide a clip of the character specified, which is double ended, that is, operable to receive papers at' either or both ends.
Another obj ect of this inventionis to pro- 4vide a double ended clip which is simple,
effective and convenient to operate.
The various objects and features of this invention will be best and more fully understood byreference to the following detailed description throughout which description reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which' Fig. 1 is an enlarged front elevation of a' clip provided by the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the clip being a view showing one side of the clip and being taken as indicated by line 2 2 on Fig. 1.
' Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the other side of the clip being a 'view taken as indicated by line 3 3 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal. central detailed sectional .view taken as indicated by line 4 4 on Fig. 1.
` Fig. 5 is an end elevation of thel clip taken as indicated by line 5 5 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a detailed transverse sectional view of the clip taken as indicated by line 6 6 on Fig. 1, and l Fig. 7 is a detailed transverse sectional view of the clip taken as indicated by line 7 7 on Fig. 1.
The "clip provided by Athis invention 1s preferably formed of a single piece of wire of the proper size, and resiliency. The clip may be considered to comprise generally, a main or center jaw A and two outerv jaws `B and C.
' The center jaw A is in the form of .an :elongated loop having a continuous side 10, a joined side formed of overlappingslde parts 11 and curvedy or bowed ends 12,. `Which connect the side parts 11 with oppo.
site ends of the continuous side '10. The continuous side 10 and the overlapping side parts l1 are preferably straight, and ex' tend longitudinally of the clip. The continuous side 10 and the ends-12 lay in a common plane which'I will hereinafter term the plane of the loop. The side parts 11 are spaced from the continuous side 10, and
overlap Vthroughout a considerable distance so that each one extends to within a short distance of the end of the loop opposite to that to which it is connected. The overlappingvportions of the side parts 11 arel lel and lay close together, one over the.
other, as illustrated` in Fig. 2 ofthe drawings. With this arrangement, the outer or free ends of the sides 11 are at .opposite sides of the plane of the loop.
Each. of the outer jaws are U shaped and may be considered as comprising the outer portion of one of the side parts 1l; a straight side part 13 arranged at the con-l tinuous side 1 0 of the loop and a bowed or curved end part 14which connects the parts 11 and 13. The side parts 13 are arranged parallel to and directly opposite the side parts 11 to which they are connected as shown throughout" the drawings." The side parts 13 are preferably arranged at' the inner side of the continuous side 11 so that their free ends 13a, which arethe ends of the piecevof wire outv of which the clip is formed, are inside the continuous part 11, and are in the plane of the loop sol that they do'not protrude or interfere with the operation ofthe device.
From the foregoing description and from the drawings, it will be seen that the outer jaws B and C face or vextend in opposite directions, that is, toward opposite ends o-f the center jaw, and that the center jaw is double ended. The jaws are related so that either Or-both. of the Outer jaws will cooperate with the center jaw to receive and old papers, 4and the likel This makes the device particularly handy and convenient to Operate, as it can be applied from either end the jaws when the device is applied. Papers arranged between the center jaw and one of the outer jaws are held by and between the side part 13 of said outer jaw and the continuous side of the center jaw and between the overlapping portions of the side parts 11.
Having described only a typical preferred form of my invention. I do not wish to limit myself to the specific details hereinabove set forth but wish to reserve to myself any changes or variations that may appear to those skilled in the art or fall within the scope of the following claim.
Having described my invention, I claim:
l A clip of the character described includ-v ing an elongate loop having one side formed of a continuous part and the other side formed of two overlapping parts extending in opposite directions and inclined to the plane of the loop so that their outer ends are at opposite sides of the plane of the loop7 and two parts corresponding to said overlapping parts'and located immediately inside the continuous part of the loop and each connected with the outer end of oneof the overlapping parts.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 13th day of June, 1924-.
F. HOWARD ROBINSON, JR.
