Abstract

A rocking device comprises a plate 8 to support the wheels or legs of a child receptacle, a cushion of liquid 11 under and supporting the plate 8, and motion means 12 to impart rocking motion to the plate. A second rocking plate 10 is provided to rock in sympathy with the plate 8.

Description

The present invention relates to a device for rocking an infant when in a child receptacle such as a pram, pushchair. baby seat or cot.
It is often desirable to apply some rocking motion to an infant when it is crying. Many infants cry in their pram, cot or pushchair, and many parents end up rocking the pram cot or pushchair to try and settle the infant. Sometimes this can be an extremely time consuming exercise and very frustrating for a parent or other child minder. The invention provides a rocking device to solve this difficulty.
According to the present invention there is provided a rocking device comprising: a) a plate to support the wheels or legs of a child receptacle, b) a cushion of liquid under and supporting the plate, and c) motion means to impart rocking motion to the plate.
Preferably the device further comprises a base to house the plate, cushion and motion means.
The base may fold to form a case to facilitate transport of the device.
Preferably the plate supports a pair of wheels or legs at either end of the plate.
The cushion may be formed from one or more substantially elongate chambers The motion means may be in the form of a motor driving a cam which engages with a cam follower connected to the plate.
In one embodiment of the invention, the plate may be concave to support and retain a pair of wheels preventing the wheels from rolling off the plate.
In one embodiment of the invention a first plate is provided rocked by the motion means, and a second plate is provided which is pivoted to rock, said first plate supporting one pair of wheels or legs and the second plate supporting a second pair of wheels or legs. Preferably at least part of the first plate is higher than the second plate.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a device together with a pram, Figure 2 shows a perspective view of Figure 1 part exploded without the pram, and Figure 3 shows a schematic cross section view of a motion means.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a rocking device 1 for a pram 2 having two pairs of wheels 3A,3B and 3C,3D.
Rocking device I has a base 4 having two parts 4A,4B hinged together by a hinge 5. When in use, parts 4A,4B have their lower surfaces resting on the floor. When not in use, base 4 can be folded so that the lower surfaces 4A,4B abut against each other so the rocking device 1 forms a case which can be carried by a handle 6 to facilitate transport of the device.
Base part 4A includes a recess 7 in which lies a first plate 8. Plate 8 is concave to support the pair of wheels 3A,3B preventing the wheels from rolling off the plate. Base part 4B includes a recess 9 in which lies a second plate 10 to support the pair of wheels 3C,3D. The leading edge of base part 4B has a tapered edge and the leading edge of base part 4A also has a tapered edge. The pram wheels can thus be pushed up the tapered edges until the wheels rest on the first and second plates. Base part 4A is thicker than part 4B and houses a motion means described more fully below and thus plate 8 is higher than plate 10.
As shown in Figure 2, first plate 8 is supported on a cushion of liquid 11 in the form of four substantially elongate sealed chambers filled with water. Second plate 10 has a flat top and has a tapered lower face so that it pivots about an apex 10A. Alternatively second plate 10 could also be on a cushion similar to cushion 11 or other pivoting means Referring now to Figure 3, a motion means provided by a motor 12 which drives a cam 13.
Cam 13 engages with a cam follower 14 connected to the plate In use of the rocking device, as the motor rotates and cam follower 14 follows the cam 13, the first plate 8 will rock from end to end which sets up a wave motion in the liquid cushion 11 to impart a gentle rocking motion to the pram. Second plate 10 will rock in sympathy. The user can thus set the pram in motion and can leave the pram.
If desired a music generator could be added to the device, e.g to play "soothing" music such as lullabies.
It may be desirable for the base part 4A to be separable from the base part 4B whereby to be able to accommodate prams or pushchairs of varying wheelbase dimensions. The rocking device could also support cots with legs.
The invention may be formed out of any suitable materials such as plastics or metal or combinations thereof.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
