STAPLE EXTRACTOR Filed May 11, 1925 Inventor Jmwi (a/aim Attorney Patented Dec. 15, 1925.

Application filed May i1. e25.- serim m. 29,553!
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST CANTIN, subjcct of the King of Great Britain, residing at Lemieux, Province of Quebec, Canada,
a have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple Extractors; and I do.
hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art H to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention pertains to a novel staple extractor designed to remove articles of this general character from fence posts and the like.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction and effective in operation. In particular, the device is so constructed that movement of the operating lever in a given direction clamps the jaws against the article to be removed and then extracts it. In the accomplishment of this object, the device consists of a bearing piece from which extends a fixed jaw and to which is pivoted the operating lever. The movable jaw is pivoted with respect to the fixed jaw and attached to the lever so as to be turned when the latter is moved. The
" initial movement of the lever clamps the jaws against the article to be removed. The
bearing piece also supports a fulcrum which, after the jaws are closed, acts as a fulcrum for the tool as a whole. Continued movement of the lever in the same direction thus causes the device to turn bodily about the fulcrum piece and thereby extract 'the article clamped between the jaws.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following description and in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device;
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof in open position;
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the device in grasping position;
Figure f is a section of the line 44 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the device in use.
Reference to these views will now be made by use of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The device comprises a bearing member 1 from which extends a fulcrum piece 2 designed to engage the post 3 from which a staple 4 is to be pulled as illustrated in Figure 5. Opposed to the fulcrum piece is a jaw disc 5 also extending from the bearingmember 1 and lying in a plane parallel to the fulcrum piece. A jaw 6 protrudes from the disc 5 and has its upper surface raised from the top of the disc as indicated by the numeral 7 in Figure 3. On the upper face of the disc 5 lies a movable jaw disc 8 pivoted thereto by means of a pin 9. The top of the disc 8 is coplanar with the top of the enlargement 7 and has a jaw 10 extending therefrom and opposed to the jaw 6. The jaw 10 is thickened as indicated by the-numeral 11 in Figure 5, so that the lower surface thereof lies in the same plane as the lower face of the disc 5.
To the bearing piece 1 is pivoted an operating lever 12 having a notch 13 near the fulcrum thereof. This notch receives a lug 14 formed as an integral part of the upper disc 8 The operation of the device is as follows: With the jaws spaced as in Figure 2, the device is arranged so that the jaws are disposed at opposite'sides of the staple 4 to be extracted. The lever 12 is now pulled downwardly, whereupon the lug 14 is drawn away from the post 3 and brings the movable jaw 10 against the fixed jaw 6. The staple is thus locked between'the two jaws. Continued downward pressure on the lever 12 brings the fulcrum piece 2 against the post whereby the device as a whole turns about this piece and thereby extracts the staple. It will be seen from the foregoing, that movement of the lever 12 in a downward direction first closes the jaws against the staple and then pulls it out.
Vhile a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus fully described the inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. An extractor comprising a bearing piece having a fixed jaw rigidly formed therewith and perpendicular thereto, a movable jaw pivotally mounted upon said fixed jaw a lever pivoted to said bearing piece and'having a notch cut therein, and a lug extending from said movable jaw into said notch.
2. An extractor comprising a bearing piece having a fixed jaw rigidly formed therewith and perpendicular thereto, a movable jaw pivotally mounted upon said fixed jaw, a lever pivoted to said bearing piece and having a notch cut therein, a lug extending from said movable jaw into said notch and a fulcrum piece extending from said bearing member and parallel to said jaws.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ERNEST CANTIN.
