The object of our invention is to provide a bolt-extractor for drawing drift or other bolts in which an operating-lever is pivoted upon a base and carrying a link pivoted at its upper end to the operating-lever and having at its lower end an outwardly-projecting lip for biting or catching one side of the bolt and a U-shaped bail pivoted to the lower end of the link and adapted to engage the opposite side of the bolt, whereby the up-and-down move ment of the operating-lever will cause the lower end of the link and the bail to catch the bolt and withdraw it.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bolt-extractor embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional View of the same, showing it in the act of extracting a bolt. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the supporting-base. Fig. t is a detached perspective view of the link. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the U-shaped bail. Referring now to the drawings, A indicates the base, which is U-shaped in plan view and has projecting therefrom the vertical ears B.
An operating-lever- G has one end bifurcated, as shown at (1, thus providing the parallel ears I), and these are pivotally supported at their lower edge between the upper ends of the standards D by means of the transverse pivotal bolt cl.
A link E is pivoted between the parallel ears of the operating-lever at their upper outer edge by means of a pivotal pin or bolt 6, and
the lower end of this link is turned outward and formed into a sharp biting or catching edge f.
A U-shaped bail G has its ends pivotedto opposite sides of the lower end of the link E by means of a pivotal bolt or pink and at a pointabove the biting edgefof thelink. The inner face of the outer wall of this U-shaped bail is provided with an inwardly-tapered or sharpened biting edge 71, adapted to engage one side of the bolt to be drawn, while the biting edge of the lower end of the link will engage the opposite side thereof.
In operation the bail is passed over the head of the bolt when the operating-lever is in approximately a vertical position, and then by a downward pressure upon the handle of the operating-lever the biting edge of the link will hold against the bolt and cause it to be withdrawn. A continuous up-and--down movement of the handle will finally entirely withdraw the bolt, as the downward movement of the link will cause its biting edge to release the bolt, as will be readily understood.
The four outer corners of the baseA are preferably slightly turned downward, as shown at m, so that it will catch into the board, tie, or other object upon which it rests to prevent it from slipping or sliding around.
Should a bolt be driven down so close that the links cannot be passed over the head thereof, the wood is cut away around the bolt sufficiently to permit the bail to pass therearound and the biting edge of the lower edge of the link to catch under the head thereof, when it can. be quickly withdrawn, and then the np-anddown movement of the lever will continue to withdraw the bolt step by step until it is finally entirely withdrawn.
A device of the above-described construction is simple, cheap, and very effective in operation.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bolt-extractor comprising a base, an operating-lever pivoted thereto, a link having its upper end pivoted to the pivotal end of the operating-lever and having an outwardlyprojecting biting edge, and a U-shaped bail pivotally connected with the lower end of the link and adapted to embrace the bolt to be withdrawn, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base, a lever pivoted thereto at one end, a link having its upper end pivoted to the pivotal end of the lever and its lower end provided with an outwardly-projecting biting edge, and a U-shaped bail pivotally'connected with the lower end of the link at a point above the biting edge thereof, whereby an upward pull upon the link will cause it to bite into the bolt and a downward movement thereof to release the bolt, substantially as described,
3. A device of the character described comprising a base, an operating-lever pivoted at one end to the base, a link pivoted at its upper end to the pivotal end of the lever, the
link having an outwardly-projecting biting edge, and a U-shaped bail pivotally connected to the lower end of the link and having an inwardly-projecting biting edge at a point above the biting edge of the link when held in a horizontal position and encircling the object to be withdrawn, whereby an up- Ward movement of the link will cause the biting edges of the bail and link to engage the bolt and a downward movement of the link will cause them to disengage it, substantially as described.
