UNITED .STATES BENJAMIN PATENT. o ncE.
AND MACHINERY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
BUILDING BLOCK AND WALL.
- Application filed September 13,1922. Serial No. 588,028.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN- F. HAY- DEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in thecounty of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Building Block and Wall, of which the following is a specification.
- The device forming the subject matter of this application is a wall made of bricks or blocks, and the invention aims to provide a structure of the sort above mentioned wherein ordinary rectangular blocks, H-shaped blocksand U'shaped blocks are so combined as to reduce the quantity of material, thereby decreasing the expense of production,
shipment and handling, the wall being so constructed that it will stand with a minimum amount of mortar both the inner and outer surfaces of the wall being smooth, the 'wall being so constituted that the constituent blocks thereof may be laid up readily bya brick layer or mason.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in theprecise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figures 1, 2 and 3, are perspective views showing the various bricks which may be .used in the construction of thewall; Figure 4 is a perspective showing a portion of a wall wherelnbricks or blocks of all three forms are uSed; Figure 5 is a longitudinal section of the wall delineated in Figure 4; Figure 6 is a perspective showin a wall made outof the blocks depicted in igures 1 and 2; Figure 7 is a longitudinal section of the wall shown in Figure 6.
Referring to Figure 1, there is provided a briek or block 1 of common rectangular and oblong form. As disclosed in Figure 2, recourse sometimes is had to a U-shaped block 2 comprising a transverse portion 3 and side arms 4. The device embodies an H-shaped building block 5 comprising parallel side arms 6 and a single connecting portion 7 joining the side arms 6 intermediate their ends, and located at right angles to the side arms 6, the side arms 6 and the connecting portion? being of rectangular cross section, the height of the block, measured between the H-shaped surfaces 20 of the block,
being approximately equal to thewidth 21 of either of the side arms 6, thereby to promote stability when the block is laid in a wall with the H-shaped surfaces 20 of the block horizontally disposed. The length 22 of the arms 6 is approximately equal to four times the width 23 of the connecting portion 7 and the distance 24 between the arms 6 being less than twice the width 21 of the arms.
The Wall as disclosed in Figure 4 is made up of H-shaped blocks 5 and U-shaped blocks 2 laid in alternating courses, the blocks 1 being disposed at right angles to each other, at a corner of the wall, the blocks 1 co-operating with the courses to dispose the H- shaped and U-sl1aped blocks of adjoining courses in break joint order and to aline the transverse parts 3 of the U-shaped blocks and the transverse parts 7 of the H-shaped blocks vertically. I v
In 'Figure 6, the wall is made up of H- shaped blocks 5 laid in alternating courses, and oblon blocks 1 disposed at right angles to each 0t er, at a corner of the wall, the oblong blocks cooperating with the courses to dispose the H-shaped blocks of adjoining courses in break joint order and to dispose the transverse portions 7 of the blocks of su erposed courses in alternating order.
at is claimed is A wall made up of H-shaped blocks and U-shaped blocks laid in alternating courses,
and oblong blocks disposed at right angles to each other at a corner of the wall, the oblong blocks cooperating with the courses to dispose the H-shaped and U-shaped blocks of adjoining courses in break-joint order and to aline the transverse parts of the U- shap'ed'and H-shaped blocks vertically.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my. own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
BEN AMIN F. HAYDEN.
