IMPROVEMENT IN CANES.

Specification formingr part of Letters Patent No. 156,456, dated November 3, 1874; application tiled To all whom it may concern:

Be it known4 that I, ROBERT G. ENGLISH, M. D., of Des Moines, Iowa, have invented a CombinedWalking-Gane, Medicine-Oase, and Stethoscope, of which the following is a specication:

'Ihe object of my invention is to furnish a l walking-cane for medical practitioners that can be used as a medicine-case, and also as a medical instrument. It consists in combining a cane, a case, and a stethoscope, as hereinafter fully set forth.

Figure 1 of my drawing is a view of Aa top portion of my cane, and illustrates the manner of constructing and adapting it for the several purposes named.

a is a section ofthe tubular body of a cane, which may be madeoi' any suitable material and of any size desired. b is the head of a semi-tubular case, c, formed and adapted vto retain vials. d is a rim on the head b, designed to engage a corresponding shoulder on the adjustable band or ferrule, which serves to lock the case b c to the cane a. f is the adjustable ferrule. It has a female screw inside, which admits and retains the screw cut on the top end of the tubular cane a. g is a bowed eX- tensiou or neck of the cane. It has a screwthread in the lower end to engage the screw on thehead b of the case c, and one in the upper end to engage and hold the head of the cane. h is the head of the cane, provided with a suitable chamber and a removable June B, 1874.

Fig. 2 represents the lower portion of the cane. m -is the movable tubular part, used for stethoscopic purposes. n is the movable socket of the cane.

Fig. 3 is the stethoscope, formed by taking the head h from the neck g and the movable section m from the cane, removing the cover J and eartnbe K from the head, screwing the hollow head h to one end of the hollow canesection m, and then substituting the ear-tube K for the socket n. A complete stethoscope can be thus readily produced whenever desired.

Fig. 4 represents a common case, b c, attached to the neck g when withdrawn from the cane a, which conceals and protects it when properly inserted. The bent neck forms a handle to take hold of in withdrawing and inserting the case, and also keeps the case in proper position and'at rest when laid down flat.
