IMPROVEMENT IN CANES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,020, dated May 20, 1873; application filed December 31, 1872.

- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MILTON OSBORN, of Albion, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Walking-Cane and Medicine-Case; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved cane, with the case partially drawn out. Fig. 2 is a' longitudinal section of the handle. Fig. 3 is aplan view of the medicinecase detached from the cane.

The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a cane or walking-stick designed especially for the use of physicians, and within the body of which is a sliding case suitably arranged for carrying phials of medicine, while the handle is adapted to receive an assortment of the smaller surgical instrum ents which are more generally used in everyday practice. Much inconvenience frequently arises from the breaking of phials in the usual pocket-cases, and the latter are often injured and entirely ruined by being wet or exposed to the weather. This invention is designed to enable the physician to carry his medicines and smaller instruments in safety in a watertight cane-body, which latter may be used as ordinary canes are employed.

In the accompanying drawing, A is a cylindrical cane-body, made of any desired material, and provided with a proper ferrule at its lower end. This cane-body may also be made in sections, similar to a jointed fish-pole, if desired, or entirely of one piece. A handle, B, also cylindrical or hollow, is also provided, which should be furnished with a suitable cap, a, and with adivision or parting at 1). Within this handle, in the chamber so made by the cap a and partition at b, the smaller surgical instruments may be safely carried. A case, 0, consisting of a slide, conforming partially, or on its lower side, to the interior shape of the cane-body, is designed to receive the phials, containing medicines, an opening being left in one side of the case for their insertion. This case may be made of any. suitable material, andthe opening at forthe insertion of the phials may have a cover hinged or otherwise secured to it, if desired. The interior of this case should be provided with partitions h, to enable the phials to be held more firmly in place, and to give more rigidity to the case. p

The handle should be secured to the case in such a manner that the former may turn a quarter of the Way round. When the cane is laid upon a table, with the handle projecting beyond its edge, this arrangement of the handle will allow it to turn downward without any tendency to partially turn over the cane and allow the phials to drop out it the case should be partially withdrawn.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the handle A, body B, and case 0, the case being relatively secured to the handle as described, and adapted to slide within the body A, as and for the purpose set forth.
