To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT FUCHS, of Biberach,in the Kingdom of Wiirtemberg, German Empire, a citizen of said German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Canes and Slide-Gages, (on which I have obtained Letters Patent in Germany, No. 55,033, dated December 29, 1889,) of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cane which is adapted for use as a slide-gage.

The invention consists in the combination, with a hollow cane, of a gage sliding in the same, a handle formed of two sections of which one is secured to the cane and the other to the gage, and means for locking the gage in the desired position in the cane.

The invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved combination cane and slide-gage, showing the same open and adjusted for use. Fig. 2 is. a similar view showing the same closed. Fig. 3 is a side view of the cane.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The handle is composed of two hollow sections a a, into the upper one of which a tube 1) is screwed, which is provided with a gradu ated scale, said tube I) being adapted to pass into the bore in the cane c, which is secured to the lower handle-section. A set-screw f passes through the threaded boss of the handle-section a and serves for the purpose of locking the tube 1) in place in any desired position in the hollow cane c.

When the cane is to be used as a slide-gage, the screw f is loosened, and the spiral spring g, surrounding the gage-tube b and resting in a recess gin thelower handle-section, presses the upper handle-section a and the gage-tube b upward sufficiently to permitof conveniently grasping the upper handle-section and withdrawing the gage-tube b as far as necessary. The gate e is automatically opened, as the spring 72, acting on the inner end of the same,

presses the said end downward, whereby the outer end 'is raised and the upper end of the gage tube b is exposed. The two pointers cl d, having screw threaded ends, can then easily be withdrawn from the tube 1), in which they are placed when not in use, and are then screwed into threaded sockets at the ends of the handle-sections a a, as shown in Fig. 1. The device can then easily be used as a slidegage. After use of such gage the pointers cl (1' are unscrewed from the handle-section placed into the tube I). Said tube 1) is moved into the hollow cane until the handle-sections a a are in contact, and the parts are then held in place by means of the screw f. When pressing the two handle-sections together, the inner end of the gate 6 comes in contact with the plate h on the lower handle-section,

whereby said inner end is swung from the position shown in Fig. 1 into the position shown in Fig. 2, so that the gate e closes the upper end of the tube 1), thereby preventing the pointers d d from dropping out when the device is used as a cane.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, With ahollow cane and a sliding gage-tube therein, ofa handle formed of two sections, one of which is secured to the cane and the other to the sliding gage-tube,-

means for locking the gage-tube in place in the cane, and pointers adapted to be screwed into the ends of the handle-sections or stored away in the gage-tube, substantially as set fort '1.

The combination. with a hollow cane and a sliding gage-tube therein, of a handle formed of two sections, one of which is secured to the cane and the other to the sliding tube therein, a binding-screw for locking the tube in place in the cane, and pointers adapted to be screwed into the ends of the handle-sections, substantially as set forth.
