Description
Patented Dec. 8, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. SMITH, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
DENTAL PASTE.
No Drawing. Application filed June 30,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOSEPH L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Paste; and he does hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to an improvement in dental paste, and more particularly in a paste suitable primarily for temporary fillings adapted to correct and reduce hypersensitiveness in cavities, but also useful and eificient as a protection for teeth against abrasion and chemical action ordinarily incident to and resulting from the affixing and 99 use of plates and other removable parts adapted for attachment to the teeth.
An object of the present invention is to provide a paste of the general character in dicated, having the properties of very slow solubility and the proper consistency at normal mouth temperatures.
A further object is to provide a paste of. the class described, of such quality and consistency as to adapt it for use and make it easy of application by the patient without expert dental assistance.
A further object is to provide a paste of the class described, which will have the proper consistency for use in the mouth and at the same time a consistency which will make it practicable for use in the ordinary collapsible tube.
Other objects will appear in the following specification.
Beeswax has heretofore been used in temporary fillings, but at normal temperatures is undesirably hard for the purposes of the present invention.
Paraflin has also been heretofore used, but is of an undesirable quality and consistency when mixed with the other necessary ingredients to make it adaptable for the above mentioned purposes, unless mixel with petroleum jelly or similar substance, and if mixed with such substance paraffin is too readily soluble to make a really satisfactory paste for the purposes served by the present invention.
In accordance with the present invention 1923. Serial No. 648,801.
a petroleum product such as petroleum jelly is combined with beeswax in proportions determined by'the particular objects. in view, it having been discovered that the combination of the petroleum product with the beeswax softens the texture of the beeswax at normal mouth temperature and produces a very superior medium susceptible only to slow dissolution in association with the remedial agents used.
For the purpose of a dental paste adapted to the uses previously indicated it has been found that a combination of the beeswax with the petroleum product above indicated in association with sodium bicarbonate, sodi um biborate, and calcined magnesia gives very desirable results. A specific formula of demonstrated etliciency consists of :Sodium bicarbonate 2 parts, sodium biborate 1 part, calcined magnesia 1 part, petroleum jelly 3 parts, wax 1 part.
In this paste the sodium bicarbonate operates to neutralize acids in the mouth and to prevent fermentation with the resultant formation of acids. The sodium biborate operates to prevent the discoloration of the teeth by the sodium bicarbonate, which otherwise has a tendency to producev a brownish discoloration. The calcined nesia is also slightly anti-acid, but is chiefly useful in reducing sensitiveness.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A vehicle for temporary tooth fillings and the like comprising beeswax and a sub-- stance having the characteristics of petroleum jelly.
2. A vehicle for temporary tooth fillingsv and the like comprising beeswax and petro leum jelly.
3. A vehicle for temporary tooth fillings and the like comprising beeswax 1 part and petroleum jelly 3 parts.
4. An improved temporary tooth filling and the like comprising beeswax, petroleum jelly, sodium bicarbonate, sodium biboratc and calcined magnesia. v
5. An improved dental paste consisting of beeswax 1 part, petroleum jelly 3 parts, cal cined magnesia 1 part, sodium biborate 1 part, and sodium bicarbonate 2 parts.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOSEPH L. SMITH.
