VANITY CASE.

To all whom it may cancer-n Be it. known that I, Gnoncr. T. BATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State. of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity Cases of which the following is a specification.

This invention which relates to a vanity,

case is concerned particularly with the provision of a compartment for loose powder, with means for opening certain slits through which the powder may be shaken therefrom, and with means by which a filling opening may be uncovered for the introduction into the powder compartment of a new supply of material. It is with objects such as these, as well as others which will hereinafter appear that the present invention is concerned.

An embodiment of my invention in a preferred form is set forth in the accompanying drawing in the manner following:

I have shown in t 0 drawing a case A with a bottom 7 from which upstand side walls 8 of any desired contour. Associated with such a case is a cover B, connected thereto, if desired, by a hinge 9. Mounted in the cover is a mirror 10 which may be held in place by a ring 11 inwardly extended from the cover side walls. Any suitable catch 12 may be employed to hold the cover releasably in closed position upon the seat.

Fitted within'the case is a frame C, preferably of sheet metal, comprising a top 13 having depending marginal side walls 14 which fit closely within the walls of the ease. An openm 15 is provided in the marginal walls 0' the frame to co-operate with the catch 12. By means of a cross wall 16 (see Fig. 2 which is positioned adjacent.

The frame top is inwardly dished or depressed to form a. circular seatfor a shaker plate 17 Extending upwardly through the center of the frame top is a pivot pin 18 which carries on'its upper side a circular huh 19 from which extend a pair of fingers 20. This hub is receivable within a circular aperture 21 of the shaker, the same being provided with a pair of oppositely extended slots 22, as best shown in Fig. 4. By the means described, I provide a releasable pivotal connection in the form of a turn button between the shaker plate and the frame top. In putting the shaker in place, the fingers 20 are first turned into alignment with the slots 22 whereupon the shaker plate will seat properly. To look the plate in position, the fingers 20 are then turned around, perhaps degrees, as shown in Fig. 1. Formed through the shaker are a plurality of openings 23 which preferably take the form of slits. These are adapted to register with corresponding openings 24 in the frame top when theshaker is rotated properly for this purpose. These movements are facilitated by one or more catches 25, preferably two in number, and each desirably formed by a depending indentation in the shaker plate. As shown, the two catches are ar ranged relatively near to each-other, and on that side of the plate which is proximate to the hinge connection 9. Beneath the two catches, the, frame top is cut away to provide an opening 26 through which a. fresh supply. of powder may be introduced into the case. By arranging the opening 26 in this relation to the two catches, I provide a means of limiting the rotary movement of tlid shaker for the reason that these catches will successively engage'with an edge 27 of: this opening whenever the shaker has been moved into a position which opens or closes the'slits 24.

From the preceding description it will be apparent that the case may be carried about with the shaker adjusted to its closed position so that no powder can escape. If it is desired to release some of the powder, a fin- A ger pressure is applied to one of the catches whereupon the shaker is turned to open the slits 2-1. This position'is reached when one of the catches is in contact with the edge 27 which borders the opening 26. After spilling out a quantity of'the powder, the shaker is again rotated, but in an opposite direction with the result that when its limit of movement has been reached, the slit openings 24- will be closed. The removal of the shaker for replenishing the case with powder resary characteristic of this hinge connection is that it shouldpermit the shaker to slip sufliciently so as to rotate on its pivot within the movement limits which are defined b the two catches 25 engaging with the edge 27 of the opening 26:

A case of the kind described should referably be made to accommodate a pu 29, and for this purpose a sufiicient clearance has been provided between the shaker plate and the mirror 10, as shown in Fig. 3. It

will be apparent that the case may be used without any danger of accidental escape of the loose owder contained therein,.owing to the sim'p e and effective means provided 'for holding the shaker-closure in place.

I claim:

1. A vanity case in which is a top plate with a seat'therein, a circular shaker plate mounted on the seat, there being openings in the two plates adapted to register when .the

shaker plate is rotated to a predetermined position, and a detachable pivotal connection between the two plates comprising a pin carried by the one and extended through an opening in the other, there being a pair of slots oppositely extended from the opening,and' a hub carried by the pin adapted to enter the plate opening, there being a pair of fingers extended from opposite sides of the hub in a manner to pass through the slots in the plate opening and when turned relative therethrough, to secure the one plate to the other, substantially as described.

2. A vanity case in which is a. top plate with a seat therein, a circular shaker plate mounted on the scat, there being openings in the two plates adapted to register when the shaker plate is rotated to a proper position for this purpose, a detachable pivotal connection between the two plates, and means on the shaker plate co-operating with a ortion of the top plate which is conceale by the former to limit the rotary movement thereof, said means also being engageable by the finger to facilitate rotation of the shaker plate, substantially as described.

3. A vanity case in which is a top plate having a seat, a shaker plate mounted with-' in the seat, there being a filling opening in the top plate beneath the shaker plate and alsoother smaller openings in both of said plates adapted' to register when the shaker plate is rotated to a proper position for this purpose, a detachable pivotal connection between the two plates, and stop means for limiting rotary movements of the shaker plate including a part depending therefrom into the filling opening adapted to engage with opposite edges thereof, substantially as described.
