\ v A. BALDESBERGER APPARATUS FOR PRESSING AND CREASING TROU$ER5 Fiied Nov. 28. 1924 gwuentoc as 6 M Patented Dec. 1, 1925.
UNITED STATES AUGUST BALDESBERGER, PITTSBURGH, PEIINSYLVANIA.-
APPARATUS FOR PRESSING AND CREASING TROUSERS.
Application filed November 28, 1924.
To all 10710972, it may concern:
Be it known that I. AUGUs'r Bnnnnsnnuonn, a citizen ot the United States, residing at lfittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Pressing and Creasing Trousers, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to an apparatus for pressing and creasing trousers and the primary object 01 the invention is to provide a conveniently operable device where by trousers may be properly shaped and creased without the arduous labor attending the pressing operation in the usual mannor.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of the class stated, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangen'ient, strong, durable and etlicient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the accomplislunent oi these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction. combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an emliiodiment oi the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
in the drawing forming a portion of this specification. and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views .i lgure l is aside elevational View of an apparatus tor pressing and creasing trousers, in accordance with my invention and in the closed position, with a portion of one of the pressing boards broken away.
liigure is an enlarged side view of a clamp member.
Figure 3 isv a sectional View on line III-III, Figure 2.
Figure at is an outer end view of the garment supporting clamp.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional View of a modified construction of a pair of press ing boards.
Referring in detail to the drawing 1 and 2 respectively denote a pair of fiat pressing boards which may be constructed from any suitable material. The pressing boards 1 and 2 are connected together at their longi- Serial No. 752,571.
tudinal edges by a plurality of hinges 3 so that they may be spread to the open p0- sition or folded together upon each other as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
The trousers to be pressed are disposed flatly between the pressing boards 1 and 2 and the latter are then secured in the pressing position by a plurality of substantially Ltshaped clamps 4 which overlap the forward edge margins of the pressing boards 1 and 2. Each of the clamps 4 is formed with a projecting apertured ear 5 which. is pivotally connected to the pressing board 1 by a pin 6. By this arrangement the clamps l may be readily shifted to the engaged position to maintain the pressing boards 1 and 2 in the pressing position or they may be shifted outwardly as shown in dash lines in Figure '1, of the drawing, to disengage the pressing boards 1 and 2 to release the latter. To facilitate the engagement oi": the clamps 4. with the pressing boards 1 and 2 the free side edges thereof are flared outwardly as indicated at 7.
U6 upper marginal edges oi the presslug boards 1 and 2 are clamped together with a pair of elongated oppositely disposed garment supl'iorting clamps 8 and 9. Each of the clamps 8 and 9 is substantially li sliaped in transverse cross section and is termed with outwardly flared free side edges 10 for thepurposc of facilitating its overlapping engagement with the edges of the presi g boards 1 and 2.
Each of the clamps 8 and 9 is formed with a projecting apertured car 11 which is pivotally connected to the upper end of the pressing board 1 by means of the pins 12.
The inner end of the car 11, of the clamp 8, is pivotally connected to the lower end of the toggle bar 13, by a pin 14, and the inner end of the ear 11 ot the clamp 9, is pivotally connected to the lower end 01' the toggle bar 15 by a pin 16. The upper endsof the bars 13 and 15 are pivotally connected together and to the plate 17 by the pivot pin 18. The plate 17 is integrally formed with the ring 19 by which the apparatus is adapted to be suspended.
The connection of the toggle bars 13 and 15 with respective clamps 8 and 9 will allow the latter to be freely and conveniently shifted to the vertical position to release the pressing plates 1 and 2 or to the operative position to engage the latter as shown in Figure 1, of the drawing. When the apparatus is suspended by the ring 19 the action of the toggle bars 13 and 15 Will tend to maintain the respective clamps 8 and 9 in the engaged position during the pressing operation.
hen the clamps 8 and 9 are disposed in the operative position they are intended to serve as a hanger element for a coat or any other garment adaptable thereto.
The modified form of pressing boards 1 and 2 shown in Figure 5, of the drawing, differ from those illustrated in connection with the preferred form in that each is constructed with centrally disposed longitudinally extending registering recess 20 whereby a clearance 21 is provided between the boards 1 and 2 when in the pressing position. The clearance 21 is adapted to com pensate for the side seams of the trousers and permit of the close engagement of the pressing boards at all other parts of the trousers during the pressing operation.
Vhat I claim is:
1. In combination, a device for the purpose set forth comprising a. pair of pressing boards, each of said pair of pressing boards having its inner face formed with a centrally disposed longitudinally extending recess, a hinge element connecting the longitudinal edges of one side of said pair of pressing boards together, a plurality of clamping members pivotally connected to one of said pair of boards and shiftable to engage the longitudinal edges of the other side of said pair of boards when the latter are in the folded position, a pair of garment supporting clamps pivotally connected to the upper end of one of said pairs of boards and shiftable to engage the upper edges of said pair of pressing boards, a toggle bar pivotally connected with the inner end of each of said pair of said supporting clamps, and a suspension element pivotally connect-- ed with said toggle bars, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination, a device for the purpose set forth comprising a pair of pressing boards, a hinge element connecting the longitudinal edges of one side of said pair of pressing boards together, a plurality of clamping members pivotally connected to one of said pair of boards and shiftableto engage the longitudinal edges of the other side of said pair of boards when the latter are in the folded position, a pair of garment supporting clamps pivotally connected to the upper end of one of said pair of boards and shiftable to engage the upper edges of said pair of pressing boards, a toggle bar pivotally connected with the inner end of each of said pair of said supporting clamps, and a suspension element pivotally connected with said toggle bars, each of said clamping members and each of said garment supporting clamps being substantially U-shaped in transverse cross section and having its inner side edges flared outwardly substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination, a device for the purpose set forth comprising a pair of pressing boards, each of said pair of pressing boards having its inner face formed with a centrally disposed longitudinally extending recess, a hanger element connecting the longi tudinal edges of one side of said pair of pressing boards together, a plurality of clamping members pivotally connected to one of said pair of boards and shiftable to engage the longitudinal edges of the other side of said pair of boards when the latter are in the folded position, a pair of garment supporting clamps pivotally connected to the upper end of one of said pairs of boards and shiftable to engage the upper edges of said pair of pressing boards, a toggle bar pivotally connected with the inner end of each of said'pair of said supporting clamps, and a suspension element pivotally connected with said toggle bars, each of said clamping members and each of said garment sup porting clamps being substantially U-shaped in transverse cross section and having its inner side edges flared outwardly, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
AUGUST BALDESBERGER.
