Description

Nov. 24, l925- R. C. RUSSELL LoosE LEAF BooK Filed July 28, 1925 Patented Nov. 24, 1925.
UNITED STATES ROBERT C. RUSSELL, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
LOOSE-LEAF BOOK.
Application filed July 28, 1925. Serial No. 46,606.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, Renner C. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh7 in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the This invention relates to improvements in loose leaf books and more particularly to that type in which the cross links which pass through the leaves of the book are connected with the covers of the book through themedium of longitudinally movable devices which cooperate with the leafpenetrating links to lock them normally in position,-the object of my present invention being` to provide simple and ellicient key-controlled means for locking the locking bars against longitudinal withdrawingl movement and causing' them to be automatically looked when moved inwardly to lock the cross links.
Vlith this and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying lrawings;
Figure l is a face view partly in section and partly broken away showing back and cover members of a book and illustrating an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view in transverse section;
Figure 3 is a view of the key, and
Figure l is a view illustrating the locking bars.'
The cover members of a book are indicated at l, l, and the back member at 2. To each cover' member', a plate 3 is secured, and each plate is bent upon itself in a manner to provide guides l, portions of which overlie respective edge portions of the back member 2. Each guide 4 receives locking bars 5 and 6, each of which may be provided at one end with a thumb 01 linger piece 7 and these locking bars are preferably made flat or rectangular in cross section. Each locking bar is recessed as' at 8 and formed with pins .or fingers k9 disposed longitudinally of the bar and projecting over a portion of the recesses so as to leave openings 921. The guides fl are provided at intervals with notches l0 to receive the perforated end portions of links or cross bars ll which are adapted to pass through suitable perforations l2 in the leaves lh-the perfor-ations in said links or cross bars 1l being caused to enter the openings 9 of the locking bars and receive the pins or 'fingers S.) on said bars when the latter are moved inwardly toward each other, thus connecting said bars or links with the book covers through the medium of the lockingl bars and guides.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, two locking bars are provided in a guide at each edge portion of the back 2 and the inner edge portions of the cover members l, but if desired, locking bars may be provided at one side only of the back and the links or cross bars 1l hinged to the opposite cover member in any suitable manner.
The locking bars 5*-6 are provided at their inner ends with extensions 14 having engaging means, (such as teeth 15 for eX- ample,) to cooperate with engaging means, (such. as teeth 16 for example) at or near the entre of a locking link or member 17 located within the `guide Ll, to lock the lock- .ing bars against withdrawing endwise move` ment. rlhe locking link is maintained normally in locked relation to the locking bars, by means of a spring '1S which is secured intermediate of its ends to said link and having its end portions bearing against the inner wall of the guide 4. In order to provide means to prevent displacement of the locking link 17 and spring within the guide fl, pins 19 are passed transversely through the guide between the spring and link, but are so disposed as not to interfere with sufiicient movement of the link to release the locking bars.
A. key hole 2() is so located in each guide 4 that when a key 2l is made to enter the same, its inner end will become disposed behind the locking link. When the key thus inserted is turned, the locking link or member 17 will be moved away from the engag ing members of the locking bars and the latter will thus be released so that they may be moved endwise to release the cross links 11, It is apparent that when the lock ing bars are moved toward each other, they will become automatically looked to the lock-A ing link.
In order to prevent the looking bars roni what I Claim, as new and desire to secure bv Letters-Patent, is
l,k In a loose. leatl book, the combination with guide means, and Cross links, of a plnrality ot lookingl bars movable in the same. guide means and provided With means to engage said -cross links, locking'- means within the gnide means to engage the inner end portionsot` adjacent lookingbars in the. same guide means and lock the said bars from endivise withdrawing' or releasing movement, and means to disengage said locking` means from the plnralitv of locking bars.
2. In a loose leaf book7 the Combination with gnide means7 and eross links, of two locking bars in the same guide means provided 'With means to engage said Cross links, each ot saidlocking bars having an engaging member at its inner end, a locking` member Within the guide means and having' engaging` means Cooperable with the engaging* means of the two looking bars to lock the latter against longitudinal withdrawing or releasing* movement, a spring normallyv pressing` said locking` member into lookingrelation to both locking; bars, means to prevent displacement ot said loeking member and spring, and means to ret act the` loekinq member from locking relation tothe locking;` bars.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
ROBERT RUSSELL.
