Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of portions of the device taken on line 3-3 85 of Figures 1 and 2;

Figure 5 is a view in perspective of an auxiliary leaf-binding member;
I0 Figure 6 is a lan view of a portion of -.the device, showing one of the covers in open position, and exhibiting a locking perspective of a Figure 7 is a longitudinal sectional view therepif taken on line 77 0 igures 6 and 8; an i Figure 8 is a plan view of the same, the locks casing being sectioned on line 88 of Figure 7.
In the embodiment of the invention chosen for illustration by the accompanying drawings and for detailed description in the body of this specification, a loose-leaf binder is shown having a lower leaf-binding member or element 1 carrying leaf-binding posts 2 4 extndin through holes in. the leaves or sheets 0 the binders contents 12, and an upper leaf-binding member or element 3, said contents being held between said members or elements, The leaf-binding member 3 has openings 4 removably receiving the upper ends of the posts 2 which ends are provided with annular grooves orrecesses 5. On the upper side of member 3 is mount ed a bar 6 slldably bearing thereon, short headed studs 7 carried by said member extending through longitudinally dis osed slots 8in the bar. This bar is provide with longitudinally extending keyhole slots 9 having at oneend enlarged portions 10 removablyreceiving the upper ends of the posts 2 in'one slid position of the bar, and restricted or narrower portions 11 engaging in the grooves or recesses'5 of said posts in another slid position of the bar, seen in Figures 3 and 4, to hold the binding members 1 and 3 together.
A spring catch 13 is mounted on a short post or stud 14 carried by the member 3 and extending through a slot 15 in the bar 7 6. This spring catch is slidable in a bearing 16 formed by the laterally extending struck up portion 17 of the bar, which portion also forms a stop 13 against which the shoulder 19 of the spring engages to hold the bar in the position seen in Figures 3 and 4 in which v the leaf-binding members 1 and 3 are securely held together. By pressing this spring catch by hand downwardly it may be released from the stop 18 whereupon the bar 30 6 may be slid manually to a position wherein the posts 2 may be withdrawn from the upper leaf-binding member 3. I
In order to conceal and protect the upper ends of the posts 2, the keyhole slots 9 35 through which they pass are covered by outwardly spaced integral portions 20 of the bar 6 extending over these slots from end to end thereof.
The said portions 17 and 20 of the bar. 6 are desirably formed by slitting the bar'and bending said portions upwardly or outwardly. y
Each of the posts 2 desirably comprises a sleeve member 21 having an inwardly extending bottom flange 22 and a second member 23 in the sleeve member and having a shoulder 24 engagingsaid flange and a shank portion 25 extending through the sleeve members flanged lower end and through the lower leaf-binding members opening 26 and being riveted'at 27 on said members under side to fasten said members 21 and 23 securely on the lower leaf-binding member 1. This second member 23 has also a reduced outer or upper portion 28 threaded as shown, on which adjustably turns the internally threaded extension member of the post 29 extending into the sleeve member 21. Either of the binders covers 30, 30 is mounted on either leafbinding member 1,, 3 by means of a plate 31 having parallel portions 32, 33 and an intermediate portion 34 extending approximately at right angles to the parallel portions; The portion 32 is hinged at its outer edge, at 35, to the outer edge of the leafibinding member and extends thence over the same, the other parallel portion33 being fastened as by rivets 36 to the inner side of the cover. It will be seen that, by this construction, the leaf-binding members or elements 1,. 3 are covered and concealed, and the outer surfaces of the cover and of the parallel portion 32 may be disposed in substantially the same plane, thus providing a device 0 this character having no pro'ecting side parts.
As shown in the modi cation in Figures 6, 7 and 8, a lock for the device is provided. The upper leaf-binding member .3 has a laterally or upwardly extending lug 40, and the bar 6 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 41 in which the lug bears in the sliding movement of the bar. A locking'bolt 42 is mounted in a casing 43 on the bar slidably in the bars transversedirection. This bolt has a slot 44 through which the lug extends, and a shoulder 45 against which the lug, spring-pressed at 46, englgges in the position of the bar 6 seen lgure 8, in which the leaf-binding posts are held by said bar. A key 47 may be inserted through the keyhole 48 in the casing and turned to move the shoulder 150f the a bolt from engagement with the lug 40 so" that the bar6 may be slid to a. position releasing the bindin posts 2.
An auxiliary leafinding member 50 may be provided havin opemngs 51 through which the leaf-bin in posts 2 removably extend, and having a ustabIeleaf-binding vposts 2 similar. in construction to posts 2 but extending. downwardly.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not tobe-limited to or by details of construction of any particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
