UNITED STA'I'ES 1,562,168 PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. HARVEY, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
Application filed. May 18, 1923. .Serial No. 639,852.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. HARVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lockets, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is a locket; and it is a special object of this invention to provide a locket adapted to contain and to dis play a variety of insignia, or the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide a locket, which may be substantially circular in outline, with means for retaining a foldable display series, which may comprise a plurality of discs, each bearing a picture or design, these discs being preferably connected by links or other means permitting them either to be folded entirely withina locket, or to be extended in substantially the same plane, or at any desired inclination one to another.
Other objects of my invention will appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, and from the appended claim, taken in connection with a the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is an elevation of a locket of my preferred design as the same may appear when closed.
Fig. 2 may be regarded as a cross section of the same locket on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 may be regarded as an elevation of my locket showing the same as opened, for the exhibiting of the insignia or other designs which may be shown upon the foldable display member comprised therein.
Fig. 4 may be regarded as a transverse section on the line l4l of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the parts of that embodiment of my invention which I have chosen for illustration, 1 and 2 may be regarded as exterior or cover members, shown ias provided with a hinge 3, and optionally also with a loop 4-, by which the same may be secured to a chain or the like. In the form shown, the exterior members are shown as substantially circular in outline, and one or both of these members may be cupped or provided with a concavity; and the men tioned exterior. members may be retained in a closed position by any suitablemeans, such as the interior spring catch 5, adapted to engage over an inwardly extending fin or. ledge 6.
Coming now to the strictly novel features of my invention, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are respective units of a foldable display device which obviously may comprise any numberof units within the capacity of the exterior elements 1 and 2. The units referred to, being shown as connected by double pivot hinges including links 11, are secured by a link 12, pivoted coaxially with the elements of the hinge 3, and by means comprising apin 13, serving as a pivot for both the exterior or cover elements 1 and 2 and the link 12, which is shown as pivoted to the unit 7 by means of a pin 14, similar pins 15 being used to connect each of the links 11 to two adjacent units in such manner that the entire series Shriners symbol being shown upon one of" the covers, and Masonic and fraternal or religious symbols being displayed upon the discs 7-10, by way of illustration.
Although I have herein described one coinplete embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that various parts thereof might be independently employed and also that various changes might be made therein without departure from the spirit and scope of my invention, as the same is indicated above and in the following claim.
What I claim is:
A locket comprising two concave-convex cover members hinged together, a linkincorporated in thecover hinge, a series ofdisplay units, each unit. having two arms projecting from the sides thereof, links having thelr ends positioned between the arms, pivot pins passing through each pair of arms and through the end of the link therebetween, thus forming double pivot hinges between adjacent units, and an end unit being hingedly connected to the link incorporated in Y the cover hinge, all of the units being capable of assuming positions in alignment and of being enclosed between said cover members.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JAMES M. HARVEY.
