P. MICHEL] SAFETY BOX Filed Nov. 24, 1924 INVENTOR PETER MIo'HELr, or.- irononjqariiiila. y p
Application filed November 24, 1924. Serial No. 7515897.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER MICHELI, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Monongahela city, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to safety boxes, and particularly to boxes especially suitable for carrying explosives in mines, although the invention may be put to other uses.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a safety box without metallic parts; which may be conveniently opened and closed; which is not subject to distortion by dampness; which has no externally projecting arts; which is securely held against accidental opening, and to simplify and im= prove generally the construction of containers of the class referred to.
My invention contemplates the provision of a box possessing any one or more of the advantages above enumerated.
Some of the forms which my invention may take are shown in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a perspectlve view of a box and cover therefor embodying my invention, in disassembled relation; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the parts of Fig. 1 in assembled relation; Fig. 3 is an elevational view of a modified form of box; Fig. 4. is a view taken on the. line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail View of the locking means which I employ for holding the cover in place on the box.
Referring further to the drawings, I provide a box proper 6 and a cover 5 therefor. The box 6 is provided with a groove 9 adapted to receive a tongue 8 when the cover 5 is in closed position. At its opposite end the cover 5 is provided with a depending portion 10 that has a hook 11 which seats within a recess 12 formed on the body of the box.
The parts 5 and 6 are preferably made of molded insulating materlal which is impervious to dampness and which may yield slightly, so that the portion 10 of the lid 5 may be sprung in slightly to permit the hook 11 to pass the upper edge of the recess 12, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5. The material which I employ may be hard rubber or the like. I
The box 6 is provided with a number of cored openings 13 for the reception of explosive caps 1 L that are provided with wires or conductors 16 insulated from one another and which may be bent back and forth to lie within the compartment 7 of the box 6.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4, I provide a box differing from that of Figs. 1 and 2 principally in .its dimensions. This box is provided with a lid 5 and a body portion 6 that cooperate in the same manner as do the parts and 6 of Fig. 1. In this case the groove 9*? and the depending portion 1O are disposed longitudinally of the box instead of transversely thereof, as shown in Fig. 1. This form of box is designedv particularly forcarrying powder cartridges or sticks 17, and being larger and heavier than the other box, is provided with eyes 18 through i which a shoulder strap 19 is threaded. i
From the foregoing it will be seen that-I provide a. box that is not subject to warping or sticking by reason of dampness, as in the case of wooden boxes, and which there fore is not likely to be roughly handled to open the same; a box which is not likel to become opened accidentally; a box w ich has no metallic parts, and a .box having a perfectly smooth exterior. The foregoing advantages are important features, especially in connection with boxes which are to be employed around mines, and concernin which the regulations of the Bureau of Mines are very strict. I
It will be understood that slight changes in detail and general arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of'the invention as defined in the accompanying claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A box comprising a body portion. having longitudinally cored recesses disposed for a portion of its length and a larger recess throughout the remaining portion of its 100 length, a transversely disposed groove in V the upper portion of the body and lying above said first-named recess, a cover having a tongue in oneend ada ted toseat within said recess, a down-turne portion at the out- 105 2. A box comprising a body portion, a 110 groove transversely disposed adjacent to one end thereof, the oppositev end well of the body. portionfbeing partially out,v a wsy' at its upper side, a cover having an end portion seating within said groove and at its opposite end provided with adoWntu-rned' portion fitting within said cut away portion,
and means for effecting detachable engagemerit between said downturned portion and that; end of the'body portion Whisk. is ad- 10 jacent thereto. i i
In testimony whereof, I, the said PETER MIGHBLI, have hereuntoset my hand.
PETER MICHELI.
