PATENT orrics MEANS roa s ronmo LINES Conrad David Schermuly, Alfred James Schermuly, and Charles Schermuly, Parkgate, N ewdlgate, England Application July 25, 1944, Serial No. 546,484 In Great Britain October 18, 1943 This invention relates to means for storing 'lines, more particularly in containers which can be waterproofed and maintained in a sealed condition until the'line is actually required for use. Hitherto, lines, particularly those which are used with rockets, have been flaked in a card board or millboard box the centre of the top of which has been cut out and replaced, the joints between the box and the cut-outs being sealed When the line is removed and the cut-out portions also removed leaving the lines exposed so that the end thereof .can be attached to the rocket bridle. Sometimes the box or container is opened in expectation of firing the rocket but circumstances arise which render the firing of the rocket unnecessary until some time later. This, of course, means that the line is exposed for some considerable time and, particularly in wet weather, the line deteriorates to some extent. The principal object or the present invention is to obviate this disadvantage and to provide a container in which the line remains sealed until the rocket is actually fired.
According to this invention the lid of a container for lines is divided along lines extending into a number of sections, the central portions of at least some of the sections being cut away and a piece of material having the shape of the sum of said cut-away portions being secured to the line, said sections and said piece being sealed together by suitable means so that when the line --is pulled said seal is broken and easyegress of the line from the container is permitted.
A simple means .of obtaining said-piece of material for attachment to the line is by utilising the piece of material remaining after the lid has been divided into the required sections.
A convenient manner of dividing the lid, in the case of a rectangular container, is along lines running diagonally of the lid. The central apices of the triangular sections thus formed may be rounded, either inwardly or outwardly, and the piece remaining (which is to be secured to'the line) will then have a circular shape or a shape 6 Claims. (01'. 206 -46) the edges of the,lid of the container are secured to the sides thereof by means of adhesive tape or the like in the same manner as thebottom and corners. The lid-of the container, at a convenient distance from its edges is scored as shown by the dotted liheit, the scoring being covered by strips of adhesive tape or the like 4. The lid is then cut diagonally alonglines I from the joints of the scoring to a point near the centre of the lid. thus forming four sections 8 from points adjacent the edges towards the centre the apices of which are rounded. By cutting the lid in this manner a piece of cardboard l somewhat resembling a four-pointed star will be leftin' the centre of the lid. The sections i and the piece I are fitted together and the Joints sealed by means of paper. which is preferable,
so although other suitable material may be used.
tainer are made up and the edges and corners An eyelet hole 8 is provided in the centre of the piece I and another (not shown) in the bottom of the container.
In operation. the sides and bottom of the conthereof reinforced by the tapes 2. Thereafter the line is flaked and Placed in the container, one end thereof being passed through the eyelet in the bottom of the container and looped and the 40 other end through the eyelet in the piece I. 'Imand reinforced by the tapes g n WW3; 4s co t iner is painted with shellac orv I 4 order to make it waterproof. The con gr;
somewhat resembling a four-pointed star. Pieces oi anyother shape may, oi' course. also be used provided they fit substantially snugly in the space left when the spices of the sections are cut away. The sealing means may conveniently consist of adhesivetape or paper. a
Some or all of the section may be scored along lines adjacent their outer edges so that the section willhinge outwardly more readily when thb mediately under the piece I the line is knotted as shown in Figure 2. At this stage thelid is placed in position. the edges thereof secured then has the appearance of Figure 1. T i When it is desired to use the line or when there is, a likelihood of the line being used in an so emergency. the looped end thereof can be made secure to any convenient structure and the free end secured to the bridle of the rocket in which I and, as the sealing of thecontaineris untouched,
position it may remain fora'ny reasonable time,
to no harm willcome to theline therein. As soon The scored portions may the sections 8. will open and allow free egress of the line from the box as shown in Figure 2, the scored edges 3 of the lid forming hinges for the sections 8. To ensure that the piece I and the diagonal cuts 5 are severed it is preferable that the material used for sealing them be of weaker 10 construction than that used for reinforcing the edges of the lid and the hinges.
It will he understood that although a rectangu- I lar container is shown in the drawing any convenient shaped container may be used but the w scoring of each section will, of necessity, have to be in a straight. line.
What we claim is: 1. A line package comprising a container havinga lid divided into a number of sections along lines extending from points adjacent the edges 1 towards the center, the inner portions of at least some of the sections being cut away to form an opening, a line within said container and having an end projecting therefrom and a piece of 35 material having the shape of the sum of said cutaway portions secured to the projecting portion of said line and fitted in said opening, light sealescapes in; means connecting adjacent sections and connecting said sections and said piece so that said piece is held in said opening whereby when the line is pulled said light sealing means are broken and easy withdrawal of said line from said container is possible.
2. A linepackage as claimed in claim 1 wherein the container lid is divided diagonally into four sections, the apices of said sections being rounded.
3. A line package as claimed in claim 1 wherein said sealing means consist of adhesive tape or .4. A line package as claimed in claim 1 wherein at least some of the sections are scored adjacent their outer edges to form a hinge for said sections.
5. A line package as claimed in claim 1 wherein at least some of the sections are scored adjacent their outer edges to form a hinge for said sections and the scored part of the sections is reinforced bymeans of adhesive tape orthe like.
6. A linepackage as claimed in'claim 1 wherein said pieceof material has an orifice through which the end of the line passes.
