Hummm E Jaxx UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST M. BEMENT, on NEw YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,120, dated October S0, 1874; application led July 27, 1874.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST M. BEMENT, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a table with sliding top and a single fall-leaf, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a bottom-side-up view, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line au, Fig. l, both views showing different positions of leaf in dotted lines. Fi g. 3 is a detail section showing construction of cross-bars C C and a a.
A represents the table-frame, with legs B, constructed in any desired manner. In the frame A are two cross-bars, C C, one near each end, as shown. D represents the tabletop, on the under side of which are two dovetailed cross-bars, a a, which fit and slide in corresponding grooves made longitudinally in the upper surface of the frame cross-bars C C. To one edge of the top D is hinged a leaf, Gr, upon the inner or under side of which are two dove-tailed erossbars, b b, corresponding in size and position with the cross-bars a on the top D.
When the leaf G is raised, the top and leaf may be moved inward, so as both to be supported upon the table frame, the leaf crossbars b entering the grooved cross-bars C of the frame. By moving them outward or forward the leaf G will fall again.
The movement ofthe table-top D is limited by means of a stop, d, on its under side coming in contact with the side pieces of the tableframe.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination, with a table-frame, having cross-bars C C, with dovetailed grooves, of the table-top D, having dovetailed crossbars a and stop d, and the hinged leaf G, having dovetailed crossbars b, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
ERNEST M. BEMENT.
