J..M. LOZAMO HAIR CURLER Filed May 27, 1924 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH M. LOZANO O PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WEST ELEG- TRIG HAIR, CURLER (36., F FHILATDELPI-IIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAIR CURLER.
Application filed May 27, 1924. Serial No. 716,159.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, .losnrrr M. lioznno, a subject of the King of Spain, and resident of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers, of which the following is the specification.
The device, the subject of this invention is a hair curler particularly adapted for the curling of bobbed hair and for that reason, one of the objects of the invention is to provide a duplex means for clamping the hair. A. means for securing the curler to the hair, before the rolling of the hair and a later means for securing the hair in the curler after it is rolled on the arms thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamping means which can be readily removed, entirely away from the hair receiving means, so that the hair may be readily applied or removed, without interference from the clamping means.
Another object of the invention is to provide a connecting means or hinge, so constructed as to obviate the possibility of the hair becoming inadvertently engaged or entangled therewith.
(Pther objects and the construction of this device will be fully set forth as the specification progresses and the accompanying drawing should be referred to for a complete understanding of the specification which follows.
in the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device open.
Fig. 2 is a top, plan view of the device closed.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 4;. a reverse plan view thereof.
Fig. 5, a perspective view of the free arms alone.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the clamping means.
Fig. 7 shows a plan view of a modified docking means, and
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a further modified construction.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures where they appear.
This curler may be formed of flat metal, a base of clamping member shown at 10 being provided with an oblong perforation 11 at one end and an overturned book 12 at the other end. A strip of flat metal of less width than the member 10 is bent at approximately mid length into a loop as shown at 13, the bending producing two arms as shown at 14 and 15, which may be caused to lie paral lel, one withthe other. The arms are of somewhat different length, the longest arm 14 being provided with a perforation 16, into which may be engaged a projection 17, at the innermost end of the overturned portion 12 of the member 10. Securing the arm 14 under the overturned portion 12 of the member 10 will retain the short arm 15 between the arms 10 and 14.
The members 10, 1 1 and 15 should be made of a resilient metal of steel, spring tempered and when the arm 15 is passed through the oblong perforation 11 in the member 10, the arms 14 and 15 will be loosely hinged to the member 12.
In the operation of this device, the base member 10 is swung away and the extreme end of the hair is engaged between the arms 14 and 15. The arms are then rolled into the hair to the desired extent and thereafter the arm 16 is engaged under the overturned portion of the member 10, as described.
To disengage this curler, it is only necessary to free the projection 17 from the perforation 16, turn the member 10 out of the way and withdraw the arms 14 and 15 longitudinally from the curler.
As shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the integrally formed arms may be of equal length as indicated at 23 and 18 and both arms may engage in a slot 19 in an overturned portion 20.
As indicated in Fig. 8, the perforated end the base member, which in this figure is shown at 21 may be inturned, so that the hinge will not be apparent from the under side of the member 21. No advantangeous' mechanical feature is obtained by inturning the perforated end 22, the only advantage being in the decorative result.
Other modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
Having carefully and fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to obtain is 1- 1. A hair curler having a base member, a plurality of relatively narrower arms formed integral and hinged to said base member,
one of said arms being shorter than the other said arms and means for locking the longer of said arms to said base member and an upward bend in said base member adjacent to the hinged end thereof, to retain said integrally formed arms spaced from said base member.
2. A hair curler having a base member one end of which is upturned to form a hook having a projection and the other end of which is provided with an oblong perforationzfa plurality of arms hinged thereto, said arms being," formed integral, said arms being of less Width than the base member, a loop formed at the junction of said arms and adapted to be engaged in the oblong perforation of said base member for securing said arms in hinged engagement with said base member and the outermost said arm being, provided with a perforation at the free end thereof to receive the projection from the hooked end of said base member, to secure all said arms in operative relation.
Si ned at the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, this 19th day or May. 1924.
JOSEPH M, LOZANO.
