PATENT. OFFICE.
MILLER, or WABA'sH, INDIANA.
WINDOW-'SHADE BRACKET.
Application filed December 27, 1922. Serial No. 609,236.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD B. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wa- Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vindow-Shade Brack- Y ets, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in "window shade brackets, and has particular reference to a window shade bracket that is adjustable so that it may be used on any.
form of window now commonly in use.
An important object of my invention is to Hprovide an adjustable window shade bracket that may be mounted on the top rail of an upper window sash, and which is carried thereby, so that the shade carried by said bracket will be raised and lowered with the upper sash of the window.
Another important object of my invention is to provide an adjustable window shade, that is mounted on and carried by the upper sash of a Window, whereby the shade will not interfere with the ventilation of a room, and whereby the shade is so positioned, that the air passing through the window, will not cause the shade to be fia-pped around, thereby injuring the same, and making unnecessary noises.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable window shade bracket, that is exceptionally strong, durable, very simple and inexpensive in construction, and that is particularly well adapted to the use for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the followin description.
In the drawings, w erein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window illustrating my invention in use,
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the brackets, and
Figure 3 is a transverse longitudinal section taken through the same.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates an ordinary form of window having a lower sash 6 and an upper sash 7. My 1nvention comprises a base portion 8, which is formed from a blank strip of material, and bent near one end to form the angular eX- tension or arm 9, whichis provided with a of lVabash and State of f plurality of apertures 10, by which means the base portion 8 may be mounted on the upper rail of the sash 7 as is clearly illustrated in the drawings. The angular eXtension 9, 'is preferably at right angles to the arm 11 which is substantially longer than the shorter arm 9. The free end of the arm 1l is provided with the reduced angular extension 12, which is bent so as to be substantially parallel with the shorter arm 9.
Used in conjunction with the base sup-v porting member 8, is the shade rollerfengaging element 13, which is provided at one end with the comparatively short angular eXtension 14, which is formed preferably at right angles to the body portion of the member 13. Of course, it is to be understood that a pair of these brackets are used on each window,
so it will be necessary to provide an aperture 15 in one of the angular extensions 14, and the other bracket will of necessity have the usual slot as is found on shade brackets. A.
right angular extension 16 is used tocon-v neet the base portion 8 and the shade roller engaging element 13, and to this en'd each arm is provided with a pair of elongated slots 1, said slots being in alignment.v
The longer arm of the member `13 is likewise provided at, its opposite end with a short reduced angular extension 18, similar to the extension 12, said angular extension 18 extending preferably at right angles to the body portion of the member 13, and preferably parallel to the shorter arm 14.
The short reduced angular extensions 12 and 18 are reduced sufliciently to allow their reception within the innermost slots 17 of the angle member 16, to permit sliding therein. As is clearly seen in Figure 2, the extensions- 12 and 18 are slidably mounted within the innermost elongated slot 17 formed in the angle member 16, and bolts 19 are adapted to be passed through the outermost slots 17, to be received within suitable screw threaded openings formed in the arms 11 and 13, and it will be seen that upon tightening of the headed bolts 19 sliding movement between the members 8 and 13 relative to the angle member 16 will be prohibited.
In use, a pair of brackets similar to that shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, are mounted upon the upper rail of an upper sash of a window, one on each end thereof as is clearly illustrated in Figure l of the drawings. The brackets are held in place Y rigid, so as by means of suitable screws, Which arer adapted to be passed through the apertures 10 formed in the arm 9 of the base portion 8. The angular section 16 may be drawn outwardly as far as desired, or shoved inwardly as is desirable, and is caused to ,be held in its adjusted position by means of the headed bolt 19, which passes through the outermost slot 17, and is connected to the arm 11 by means of the threaded open- Y ing. The projection 12, slidable in the innermost slot 17, acts asa guide for the angular extension and the arm 11, and likewise prevents lateral movement of the angular extension 16 relative to the arm 11, and furthermore Aacts vas an additional lsupport. `When the arm 15 has been adjusted relative to the arm 11, the armr 13 may be adjusted relative to the angular extension 16, in the same manner as the extension 16 is regulated relative to the arm 11.
It Will thus be seen, that I have devised a very simple yet efficient form of shade bracket, that may be readily adjusted to any size of Window, or any length Window shade, and which, When applied or `put in'use, will be carried by the upper sash of a Window, and Which Will hold the shade substantially to prevent sagging thereof.
It is to be understood that the for-m of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred embodiment Y of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, spirit, of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my what I claim as nevv isz- A shade bracket of the class described comprising a base portion, a reduced angular projection extending from one end of said base por-tion, an angular member including a pair of angularly disposed arms each having therein a pair of elongated slots in alinement with one another, said angular extension being slidable in one slot of one arm of said angular member, the movement thereof being restricted by the confines of the slot in which it isdisposed, and means invention,
Without departing from thev to holdsaid angularextension and base portion inan adjusted position in relation to the angular member, a shadev roller engaging element having a reduced angular projection formed on one end of said element extending into they slot of the other arm of said angular member and means for holding said shade roller engaging element in an adjusted position in' relation to said angular member. y
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
RICHARD B. MILLER.
