Description

vV. PLATZ. Toy Paper-Crackers.
Paten`te-d Oct. 13,1874*l ED. @QQ
@wwf
UNITED STATES PATENT EEIGE.
VALENTINE PLATZ, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY PAPER-CRACKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,970, dated October 13, 1874 application iled August 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTINE PLATZ, residing in Indianapolis, in the *county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Toy Paper-Crackers, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in folding a sheet of paper in such a manner that, by means of a sudden and rapid movement, certain of the folds vare expanded to create a vacuum, and thereby cause a report similar to firing a gun, the report being more or less loud in accordance with the expertness of the operator, the object being to furnish a comparatively inexpensive toy for the amusement of children that will, in a great measure, supply the place of powder' or other dangerous explosive.
In the drawing, Figure l shows about the proportions of the sheet of paper of which the toy is made, the dotted lines indicating the manner of folding. Fig. 2 is a side view of the toy, and Fig. 3 shows the open side somewhat spread out, to exhibit more clearly the manner of folding.
The paper is cut and folded in such manner as to form two short loose folds or pockets, B, between the permanent or fixed folds A, so th at, by taking hold of the end lettered O, and
keeping it as nearly in the position shown in Fig. 2 as practicable-that is, the lower edge perpendicular to the axis of motion, which in this case is the shoulder of the operator-and then, by a sudden and rapid movement downward, the air is caught by the short folds B, which are forced out,as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, and thereby forms a vacuum, which, being suddenly filled with air, causes a report similar to the firing of a gun.
The toy may be made of any desirable size or suitable material, and either plain or ornamental.
The peculiar manner of folding affords two pockets or folds that may be thrown out instead of one, as heretofore in use, and also has the advantage of durability, as only one pocket need be used at a time.
I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, the toy paper-cracker, consisting of the sheet A, having the double folds or pockets B B, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
VALENTINE PLATZ.
