Description
W. B. STEWART.
lmprovement in Insect-Destroyer Patented Oct. 8,1872.
C4 Lam/wad,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. STEWART, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT ,IN lNSECT-DESTROYERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,116, dated October 8, 1872.
V vermin have been destroyed by means of powder blown into the crevices and spaces occupied by them. To effect this object an ordinary pair of bellows has been employed with an attachment for holding the powder, so that the air blown from the bellows would carry with it the said powder; but this powder-blower has been too large for use under the circumstances usually existing, and required both hands to operate it. Other powder-blowers, in the form of elastic cylinder and balls, have been employed, but they are liable to spill the powder or to become clogged at the nozzle.
My invention is made for furnishing a cheap, strong, light, small, and eifective powder-blower and holder, that can be used in one hand and turned into any desired position for directing the powder, and into which the powder can be inserted with facility.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the said powder-blower, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
My improved powder-blower is made somewhat like a small bellows, with the wooden side a hinged at b to the side 0, also of wood, and thetleather bag or inclosure 01 attached to the edges of the sides a and 0. The side 0 is extended, and forms a tapering nozzle, 0,
which is made of wood on account of cheapness and facility of construction.
Instead of the valve usually employed in one side of the bellows I make an opening, f, through which the powder is introduced directly into the blower, and this hole f may be closed by a stopper, but it is in such a position that it can be covered with the thumb or finger while in use, thereby facilitating the insertion of the powder and there is no separate nozzle or tube that is liable to be mislaid or lost, or be the means for allowing the powder to be spilled.
The spring 9 is employed to distend the bellows by forcing the sides a and c away from each other; and I remark that the nozzle 0 will be kept free from obstruction by the air drawing in through the same, and more or less powder can be projected with each blast according to the inclination at which the bellows is held.
I claim as my invention The insect-powder blower, made with the two wooden sides a c, and nozzle 0, and the flexible material d, uniting the said sides and the hole f, for the insertion of the powder, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 7th day of June, A. D. 1871.
WILLIAM- B. STEWART.
