TOY. I
Application filed. March 7, 1923. Serial No. 623,471.
Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy or novelty of the .jack-in-the-box type, the object of the invention being to provide means whereby a figure will spring from the box upon the cover being opened.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like' characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of the box with the cover closed, parts being broken away.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the cover open and the figure in raised position.
Figure 3 is a section on. line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In these views 1 indicates a box, the up per end of which is provided with a sliding cover 2 which operates in the guideways 3 so that the cover will slide from one endof the box. A. figure 4, made to represent a portion of a snake, is pivotally mounted in the box, the figure being of curved shape and having the pivot pin passing through one end thereof and through the upper corner of the box. so
that thecfigure can be entirely enclosed by the box or can be made to project therefrom as shown in Figure 2. In order to cause the figure to project from the box when the cover is opened I attach said, figure to the bottom of the cover by means of the string 5, the string passing over the guide 6 in the box and through a small opening 7 made in the top edge of that end of the box from which the cover is' withdrawn.
It will thus be seen that when a person slides open the cover the string being pulled upon by the cover will swing the figure upwardly so that its head portion will project from the box.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
WVhat I claim is I V A toy of the class described, comprising a box, a. sliding cover for the box, said box having an opening in one end directly under the cover, a U-shaped'figure made to represent a snake having one end pivoted in the box so that its other end can project from the box, a pin extending transversely through the box adjacent the pivotal point of the figure and a string connected with the bottom of the cover and with the figure near its pivotal end and adapted to be guided by the pin.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signat'ure.
JOSEPH A. HAY.
