Description

Patented Mar. 10, 1925- UNITED STATES SAMUEL ROSENTHZAL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOY MOUTH STRUCTURE.
Application led May 27, 1924. Serial No. 716,236.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. ROSEN- TI-IAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, United States of America, have invented a new and Improved Toy Mouth Structure, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to toys and refers more particularly to a mouth struct-ure therefor.
The outstanding object of the present invention is to provide ay mouth structure for stuHed toys which includes means for effecting the opening and closing of the mouth, said means serving to normally hold the mouth in a closed position, and being capable of manipulation to open the same.
The invention furthermore comprehends a sound producing` device operable by the jaw opening and closing means in order to synchronize the sound with the movement of the mouth.
As a` further object the invention contemplates a toy mouth structure which is extremely simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture and produce, and which is highly attractive and amusing.
l/Vith the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following speciication, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy equipped with a mouth structure in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional view therethrough.
Referring to the -drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates the body of a stuffed toy provided with a head 11 rotatably connected with the body by a swivel 12 which passes through a disk 13 closing the lower end of the head and a disk 111 closing the upper end of the body. The mouth structure consists of upper and lower jaw members 15 and 16 hingedly connected at their inner or rear ends by a Hexible strip 17 i which permits of relative opening land closing movement of the jaw members. In
order to provide means for connecting the l lower jaw member 16 with the disk 13 whereby the jaw member 16 is normally maintained in closed position and whereby pressure upon the front of the neck to effect the swinging of the j aw member 16 to open position, a relatively heavy coiled expansion spring 18 is connected at its opposite ends respectively to the jaw member 16 and the disk member 13. The spring 18 is normally in a curved or arcuate line closely conforming to the contour of theI chin and forward portion of the neck so that inward pressure on the neck to further bow or Hex the spring 18 will cause a pull to be exerted on the lower jaw 16 to move the same downwardly to an open position. It thus follows that when the pressure on the neck and spring 18 is relieved the spring 18 will return the jaw 16 to its normal closed relation to the jaw 15. In order to further add to the attractiveness of the toy, a sound producing device 19 is embedded in the stuffed head 11 and is provided with a movable wall 20 arranged contiguous to the periphery of the convolut-ions of the spring 18 whereby pressure exerted on the neck and spring will effect a movement of the movable wall 2O to produce a sound synchronized with the movement of the jaw 16.
In lieu of exerting a pressure on the neck to open the jaw 16, a chain 21 may be attached to the lower jaw or chin of the head 11 so that a downward pull thereon will open the mouth, Hex the spring and operate the sound producing device 19. The sound producing device 19 may be of any desired type, which in the present instance consists of a small bellows having a reed 22 through which the internal pressure of the bellows exhausts upon compression thereof and which bellows is normally opened by a coiled expansion spring 23.
I claim:
1. A mouth structure for stuffed toys comprising a pair of relatively movable jaw members, and means for effecting the opening and closing of the mouth which includes a spring connected at its opposite ends to one of the jaws and the botto-m of the head, said spring serving to normally eHect the closing of the mouth and adapted to open the same upolrli pressure exerted to Hex the spring latera y.
2. A mouth structure for stuHed toys comprisin-g a pai-r d'f relatively "movable jaw members, means for effecting the openmg and closing of the mouth which includes a spring connected at vits'oppositreendsltowne of the jaws and the bottom of the, liead, said spring serving to normally e'eettheclosing of the mouth and adaptedeto open-the same upon pressure exerted to Aflex the spring latorally, mnd a lsound producing dev-icen em- 10 .,bedded t in L the 1 head ,of f. the toy yadjaoent the fsprng `,and y operable .upon v,opening of lthe Amouthftovproduce therewith.
