Specification of Letters Patent.

T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS V. ARONSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Talking-Toy Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in so-called talking toys, and more particularly to mechanism for controlling the character of the sound to be emitted thereby.
It has for its object to simplify such mechanism and reduce its cost, as well as to render the said mechanism more positive in itsactioii and less likely to operate unsatisfactorily or become totally inoperative under the rough treatment to which toys of this character are generally subjected.
The nature of the invention will be best understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which' Figure 1 shows in perspective a bellows and a reed pipe or the like, together with mechanism for controlling the sound emitted thereby. Figs. 2 to 6 are similar views Y illustrating modifications.

Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, 10-
and 11 designate the members of the bellows which are hingedly connected at one end and normally held in'distended position by means of a spring 12, as is well understood. The bellows is adapted to be suitably secured. in position within the body of the toy (not shown) and is actuated by pressing 'upon' some portion of the toy, all of which is'well understood and forms no part of the present invention which has for its object the control of the character and duration of the sound emitted when the bellows is being compressed. The member 11 carries at its upper surface the usual reed pipe 13 or the like and which communicates with the interior of the bellows, one end of said pipe extending also into a sound box 1-1 provided with an orifice 15. This orifice is normally closed by means of a pivoted flap 16 held to the top of the sound box by a suitable spring 17. An arm piece 18 attached to or preferably integral with the flap 16 extends laterally over the member 11 and then downwardly toward the member 10. Theouter end of this arm piece is provided with a slot 19, one side of which has inwardly directed projections 20 and 21 which are adapted to engage a pin 22 extending outwardly from the side of the member 10 into the said slot 19. As the bellows is compressed, the engagement of projections 20 and 21 with the pin 22 will cause the flap 16 to swing on its hinge in opposition to the spring 17 and thereby open the orifice accordingly. The number and length of the said projections as well as the distance between the same is regulated to the resultdesired.
Fig. 2 shows the sound box omitted, and areed pipe :25 of considerable length is employed with a valve piece or flap 26 arranged to be held directly against the outlet of the same as by means of a spring 27. T o the valve piece of flap 26 is fixedly secured a rod 23 which is provided withsuitable project- ions 29 and 30, said rod bearing against a pin 21 attached to the member 10 and adapted to cooperate with said projections to open the valve piece or flap 26 as the bellows is compressed.
In Fig. 3, a pivoted flap 35 is'shown held to a sound box 36 by means of a spring 37 and an arm 38 is arranged to extend laterally over the member 11. A control member 39 is pivoted at one end to one side of member 11 and at the other end is provided with a slot 40 into whichfits a pin 41 extending from the corresponding side of side of member 10 and extending upwardly toward the member 11.
In Fig. 5, a lever valve piece or member 55 is shown pivotally mounted to swing over the top of a sound box 56 to uncover an orifice 57 thereof, the said valve member being normally drawn by means of a spring 58 into position to cover said orifice. The outer arm of said valve member passes over the member 11 of the bellows to the front of the same where it is provided with a slot 59 into which extends a rod orplate 60 fixedlysecured to the member 10 at the front thereof and moving with the same relatively to the arm of valve member 55 as the bellows is compressed.- One side of plate 60 is provided with lateral projections 61 and 62 adapted to engage the cor.- responding end of the slot 59- whereby, as the bellows is compressed, the valve 55 will be accordingly swung oil the orifice 57 to expose the same.
In Fig. 6, a flap 65 is shown extending over a sound box 66 and is secured to a rod 68 which, by means of a spring 69, is turned compressed.

Sound controlling device for talking l toys, comprising a reed pipe or the like provided with an orifice, and a suitable bellows carrying said reed pipe and adapted to operate the same; a valve piece normally clos-* ing said orifice and provided with an outwardly extending arm provided with suittached to said arm but adapted to directly engage the projections of the same. tooperate the valve piece as the bellows is compressed.
3. Sound controlling device for talking toys, comprising: a reed pipe or the like provided with an orifice, and a suitable bellows carrying said reed pipe and adapted to operate the same; a pivoted, spring held valve piece normally closing said orifice and provided with an outwardly extending arm provided with suitable. projections; and a controlpiece carried by one member of said bellows, unattached to said arm but adapted to directly engage the projections of the same to operate the valve piece as the bellows is compressed.

Sound controlling device for talking toys, comprising: a reed pipe or the like provided with an orifice, and a suitable bellows carrying said reed pipe and adapted to operate the same; av pivoted, spring held valve piece normally closing said orifice and-provided with an arm piece extending outwardly over said bellows and then turned downwardly toward. the bottom thereof, the outer *end of said arm being slotted and having. projections extending into. the slot,
