c. A. FOX
I COLLAPSIBLE BOX Filed Jan. 9, 1925 2 Sheets-Sheet 1.
\NVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 27, I 1925.
UNITED STATES CHARLES A. FOX, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COLLAPSIBLE BOX.
Application filed January To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, CnAnLns'A. Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county of-Ncw York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification. l i
This invention relates to improvements in receptacles and has particular reference to a collapsible box.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved box of simple and inexpensive construction in which the walls of the sections thereof are so formed and vassembled as to reduce to a minimum the amount of material wasted in the construction of the box and to provide. a box which will be adequately reinforced against collapsing when in use.
Another object is to utilize a portion of the intermediate section of the box which is interposed between the top and bottom sections thereof to provide locking elements capable of engaging one of the walls of the bottom section to aid in maintaining the latter walls in operative position.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate preferred embodiments of the inven tive idea.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the invention with the box in partially closed position;
Figure 2' is a vertical sectional View there through;
Figure 3 is a plan View of the box illustrated in Figure 1, showing the same in its collapsed position and Figure 4 is a transverse section through the box taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Theform of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings is illustrated in connection with what is generally known, as the telescoping type of box, but it is to be expressly understood that said drawings a e used merely for the purpose of illustrating the invention as a whole and not to define the limits thereof, reference being had to the appended claims for this purpose. 4 As shown, the box consists of bottom and 9,1925. Serial No. 1,436..
152 overlapped and secured to the ends of the front wall 10, and a rear wall 13 which likewise has its ends 14 overlapped with the rear ends of the side walls 11 and secured thereto by suitable fasteners 14. The side walls 11- and ends 14 are scored, as indicated at 15, so'that the front and rear walls 10 and 13 may be collapsed as illustrated in Figure 3. The bottom'edge of the rear wall 13 is provided throughout its length with a laterally extending reinforcing.
flange 16 which engages the bottom of the section 7 to aid in maintaining the rear wall 13 in its operative position and preventing inward collapsing of said wall when the box is collapsed.
The top section also includes side walls 17 and a front wall 18 secured together and scored in the usual manner so as to permit 1 of the section being collapsed, as shown in Figure 3, the rear wall of said top section being formed by the "intermediate section 9 which acts as a further reinforcement for the rear wall 13 of the bottom section when the box is closed. I
In accordance with the present invention it is proposed. to provide further means for maintaining the Walls of the bottom section of the box in operative position and for this purpose the ends of the intermediate section 9, which form continuations of the side walls 11 and 17 of the bottom and top sections, and which are scored, as indicated at 19, to permit of the folding of the sections as indicated in Figures 1 and 2, are
cut to form locking elements or tongues 20 attached to the side walls 11 of the bottom section. When setting up the box these tongues are bent inwardly into engagement with the rear wall 13 and the free extremities of the tongues are inserted into angular slots 21 formed in said rear wall so as to provide an interlocking engagement between the side walls 11 and said rear wall.
It is noted that the fasteners 14- all penetrate each of the side walls 11 and ends 14 below the folding lines 15 so that the portion of each end wall above the folding line and adjacent the locking tongue will be left unattached. This will permit of a free movement of the tongue in a vertical plane when being inserted into its slot 21 Without placing any undue strain upon the fasteners 14', as said upper portion of the wall 11 above the folding line may have a slight outward movement relative tothe end 14 when said tongue is being manipulated priorto being engaged in its slot.
What is claimed is:
1. In a collapsible box, a bottom section including side walls and a. rear wall having its ends overlapping said side walls,'
section, an intermediate section connectingsaid top and bottom sections, and locking elements formed from the material of said intermediate section and connected to said upper portions of the side walls above said folding lines'and capable of being inter? locked with said rear wall.
2. In a collapsible box, a bottom section including side Walls and a rear wall'having its ends overlapping said sidewalls, means to secure the lower portion of each overlap-. ping end to the adjacent side wall with the upper portion of said end and contiguous portion or said side Wall remaining unattached to perm'it'of a relative outward movement of the latter portion of the sidewall, a top section, an intermediate section connect-.
ing the top and bottom sections, and locking-elements form cd from the-material of said. intermediate section andcarried by the upper portions of said side walls andcapnble of being interlocked with said rear wall; In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
' cats, A. FOX.
