Description

J.L.ROWE;
Trusses.
No 155 891 Patented Oct-13,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN L. ROWE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Lettms Patent No. 155.891, dated October 13, 1874; application filed September 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. ROWE, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Trusses, of which the following is a specification:
Trusses have been made with a pad attached to a spring that passes partially around the body, and these pads have been adjustable by a screw, and in some instances a spring has intervened between the pad and the bod yspring.
My present invention consists in a plate sustained in position by a waist-belt and perineal strap, in combination with a spring that carries the pad, an adjusting-screw for regulating the pressure, and slot and screws for attaching the pad to the spring, so as to vary the position of the said pad to suit the hernia.
By this construction the truss is rendered very effioient in its action upon the. hernia, in consequence of the pressure being variable, the connections entirely flexible, avoidingthe ordinary body-spring, and the pad being variable in its position or inclination to suit the V rupture.
in the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the truss complete. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the belt hook and clasp.
The truss-plate a is made with the slots 1), c, and d. The waistbelt h is attached at one end in the slot b, and a buckle-hook, e, hooks into the said slot 0, and the perineal strap f is fastened to the plate a at the slot 01, and extends to the waist'belt h near the back. The buckle-hook e is made with the hooked end 3 and cross-bars 4 and 5, and upon the bar 4: are teeth 6, that engage the belt as it is passed through between the respective bars, so as to prevent the belt slipping. The spring l is attached at one end to the plate a, and at the other end of said spring the truss-pad m is connected by the screws 01. and o, the screw 0 passing through a segmental slot in the spring, so as to allow of the truss-pad being moved and inclined in either direction to suit the shape or position of the hernia. A screw, i, passes through the plate a, and presses upon the spring 1 near the back of the truss-pad, so
as to adjust the pressure of the pad upon the hernia.
By this construction of truss the spring of the plate a, under the tension of the straps, is availed of in pressing the pad to its place, and the rigid or partial-yielding bar or spring running partially around the body is dispensed with, rendering the truss much less liable to be misplaced.
I claim as my invention- The plate a, sustained in position by the waist'belt h and perineal strap f, and. made of spring sheet metal, in combination with the spring l, pad m, adj ustingscrew r, and attaching screws n 0 and slot, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 19th day of September, A. I). 1874.
JOHN L. ROWE.
