Apiiiicat'ien filed m 5,1925. serial N... 1253341 1 To all whom it may fcf ofit'cerot: j
Be it known that I, DoiutrTI- K ALESKU'S, a
the county" of Garlt sota, have inventec ce1tainnew"and useful Improvements in Saw Setti'ngApparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in saw setting apparatus, and par ticularly to improvements in Letters Patent No. 1,450,456, issued to me on March 17, 1925, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a device of this character permitting a very simple regulation for setting teeth of varying length, and width.
The invention particularly improves upon said Letters Patent by providing a strong and durable structure which will be both eflicient and reliable in operation, easy to manipulate compact, rigid, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other obj ects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the saw setting device embodying the features of the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking to the left.
Figure 3 is another enlarged transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking to the right, and
Figure 4 is a detail enlarged perspective view of the regulating plate.
' Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the stem 10 is constructed with a flattened top part 11, rounded side faces and flattened bottom parts 12 and 13.
The front end of the stem 10 is threaded as indicated at 14 for the attachment of a comparatively long hollow handle 15 provided at one end with internal threads to engage thread 14 of the stem.
A sleeve 16 having its inner wall shaped to snugly fit against the outer face of the stem and adapted to slide thereon, carries on top a projecting collar 17 provided with inner screw threads for reception of the citizen of Lithaaniaresictia at Croquet, in i on and state or Minneits lower end 20 theside facelof a saw, the
l e, n'gof sleeve is on the stem, 10.
j The lower end ofithe stem 16 has integrallj made therewith a horn19 to engage with ade'djendsof a bolt18 allowing a teeth of which are to beset. Thus .farwit will be seen that'thisdevice is identical with that shown said patent.
The rear end of the stem 10 is beveled as at 21, and flattened as at 22. This flattened portion 22 has a slot extending upwardly from its under edge as at 23 thereby forming jaws 24 and 25 which are adapted to straddle the toothed edge of the saw as is indicated to advantage in Figure 1. The extreme out edge of the flattened part 22 of the stem 10 merges into a handle 26 coaxially disposed with the handle 15. The stem 10, flattened portion 22, and handle 26 form an integral structure preferably of metal which may be molded or otherwise formed with the features described above.
A bracket 27 is bolted as at 28 to the flattened portion 22 immediately above the up per end of the slot 23 and the intermediate portion thereof is disposed in spaced relation to the flattened portion for slidably receiving a regulating plate 29 having at its upper end a head 30, and atits lower end a lateral lug extension 31, which is adapted to slide in the slot 23. The plate29 is held in different adjusted positions by set screw 82 threaded through the intermediate portion of the bracket 27.
A saw, the teeth of which are to be set, is placed with its side faces between the sides of the slot 23, and the plate 29 is raised or lowered in proportion with the depth of the teeth and then looked in its position by means of the set screw 32. It is possible to set the teeth at any desired angle by the manipulation of handles 15 and 26.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a greatly simplified structure which is exceedingly stronger, and more durable than that shown in my previous patent. The device as im proved, is capable of being manufactured at a relatively low cost, and will bethoroughly reliable, and particularly effective in setting rather heavyand large saws. The construction, operation, and advantages should now be clearly understood by those skilled in this art without a more detailed description. It is-apparent that the present embodiment of the invention has been given merely by Way of example and attains the features of advantage enumerated in the statement of th invention and the above description. It is desired, however, to point out that numerous changes inthe details of construction, in the materials, in the proportions, in the sizes, and in the combination and arrangementof parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages. Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A saw setting device including a stem having one end threaded, and the other end merging into a flattened portion, a handle threadedly engaged on the threaded end of th stem, a second handle extending rigidly from the flattened portion coaxially with the first handle and the stem, said flattened portion provided with a slot forming a pair of spaced jaws, a regulating plate slidably mounted over the slot in the flattened portion and having an extension at its end disposed in the slot, a plate on the flattened portion, said regulating plate slidable through saidlast mentioned plate, and a set screw threaded through the last mentioned plate for holding the regulating plate in different adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
