Description

Feb. 17. 1925. '1 526 407 I 1. WRIGHT o SGISSORS GAUGE Filed D60. 6. 1922 q 5 Z Q lo 55%: l Mill-Ill) FIGURE 2 INVENTDR BY W '4 ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 17, 1925.
PATENT QFFICE.
IRVIN WRIGHT, OF MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA.
SCISSORS GAUGE.
Application. filed December 6, 1922,
'1 0 all 207mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVIN Zen of the United States, and resident of Mountain View, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors Gauges, of which the following is a specification.
In using his scissors for cutting hair a barber ordinarily finds it diificult to keep his thumb properly placed in that portion of the handle designed to receive it. Since the thumb is prone to slip forwardly through the handle it is necessary for the user to constantly stop his work and readjust the thumb to the handle.
It is the object of my invention to provide a device mountable upon a scissors handle whereby to reduce the proportions of the orifice therein.
It is another object of my invention to provide a device of the character indicated that is adjustable with relation to the handle orifice whereby any desired opening may be secured.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a device of the character indicated so formed as to provide a suitable grip for the thumb passed thereover.
It is a final object of my invention to pro vide a device of the character indicated that will be simple in form, economical to manufacture, durable in construction, and highly eficient in its practical application.
I11 the drawing z- Figure l is a bottom plan view of a pair of barbers scissors provided with my gauge.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the handle of the scissors shown in Figure 1 with the gauge in position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged view on 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged top plan View of the device in position, a portion only of the scissors handle being shown.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring more ing, I show at 1 a scissors 2. At 3 I lVRrerrr, a citiparticularly to the drawportion of the handle of show a U-shaped member Serial No. 605,258.
the orifice therein. In the back of member 9 -0 IS a set screw 5.
Held in place on the back of member 3 by set screw 5 is a plate 6 having a slot 7 formed therein and carrying an arm 8 extending laterally therefrom in such a manner as to extend across orifice 9 in the handle portion 1 of scissors 9.. This arm 8 has its upper surface bevelled as at 10, the said bevel extending downwardly and forwardly toward the orifice 9 and providing a grip for the thumb when it is inserted in orifice 9 over arm 8.
In its practical application the arm 8 is mounted on member 6 by set screw 5. The device as a whole is then arranged in position as shown and secured by screw 4. The user now loosens screw 5 and moves arm 8 into such a position that he can readily insert his thumb thereover without there being suflicient room to permit his thumb to slip further than desired. The screw 5 is now tightened up and the device is in position for use. Since the thumb slips over the bevelled portion 10 it engages the edge 11 of arm 8 and a good grip is secured.
By securing a device of this kind on a pair of scissors they may be readily adjusted for use by anyone, whether the thumb be slender or thick.
It is to be understood, of course, that while I have herein shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention, changes in form, proportions, construction and method of operation may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim l. A device of the character indicated comprising a member mountable upon a scissors handle, and an arm carried by said member to extend across the orifice in said handle and reduce the size thereof.
9.. A device of the character indicated comprising a member mountable upon a scissors handle, and an arm adjustably mounted on said member to extend across the orifice in said handle and reduce the size thereof.
' A device of the character indicated comprising a clamp adapted to be mounted comprising a clamp member adapted to enupon a scissors handle, a plate adjust-ably gage a scissors handle, a screw mounted mounted on said clamp, and an arm carried 10 therein to secure the same to a scissors by said plate and arranged to extend across 5' handle and a thumb engaging arm mounted the orifice of the scissors handle upon which on said clamp member. it is mounted.
Q. A device of the character indicated IRVIN WRIGHT.
