RUFusn. KING, or BOWMAN, GEORGIA.
IS/AW-IJOINIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 605,550, dated. June 14, 1898. Application filed December 16, 1897. Serial No. 662,123- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, RUFUS D. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowman, in the county of Elbert and State. of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Jointers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to a novel form of sawj ointer; and the object is to provide a simple,
' inexpensive, and. effective device for accurately jointing or striking the teeth of circular and reciprocating saws.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of'a good mechanic without-departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate thesame parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved saw-jointer. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same: Fig. .3 is a transverse section through one of the parallel'arms on the line of one of the thumb-screws.
1 represents an approximately U-shaped casting comprising the yoke 2 and the integral parallel arms 3 4, between the inner parallel edges of which is formed the longitudinal slot 5.
6 6 denote alined shoulders formed at the upper ends of the inner edges of the arms to form a support for the jointing-file 7, which is removably fixed thereon by means of the set-screw 8, adjustably secured to the yoke 2, so as to secure the file at a right angle to the arms. v r
9 and 10 represent guide-plates adjustably secured to the arms 3 and 4 by the thumbscrews 11 12 and 11 12. The orifices 13 13 in these guide-plates are considerably larger than the shanks of the thumb-screws, so as to permit of their lateral and longitudinal adjustment. The collars 14 on these thumbscrews are of sufiicient diameter to take a firm bearing on the face of the guide-plates on each side of their respective orifices, and thus firnnly secure the guide-plates to the arms in the position in which they have been adextended below the bottom of the teeth, so
that their lower ends will have a bearing on the solid body of the saw and the operation conveniently and satisfactorily performed. Another feature of this construction is that these guide-platesbeing independently adj ustable at each end the lower ends or edges of the guide-platesmay be made to ]converge with reference to each other, so as to snugly fit a hollow-ground saw or one in which the back is considerably thinnerthan the toothed edge, and, as all, circularsaws are ground in this way, this form of jointer is particularly adapted to this style of saw.
The file-blade 7 is reversible, and of course removable as well, and a suitable piece. of emery-stone can'be used inits stead on circular saws to joint the teeth to the same length.
One side of the file-blade is preferably cut coarse and the'othe'r finefor use on saws with small teeth. 5 g
It will be observedthat the space between the parallel walls of the yoke above the shoulders 6 6 is considerably greater than the width of the file, so that the file-blade may be adjusted both laterally and longitudinally to utilize its entire surface.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-- v g A saw-j ointer comprising the yoke 2, formed with the integral parallel arms 3v 4, having the alined shoulders 6 6,in combination with by said set-screw S, substantially as shown IO the guide-plates 9 and 10 formed with the enand described. larged orifices 13 13, the thumbscrews 11 11 In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my and 12 12 provided with collars 14C, and adaptsignature in presence of two witnesses.
5 ed to secure said guide-plates to said arms so P v T i that the former may be both laterally and RUI Us longitudinally adjustable thereon, the setlVitnesses: screw 8 secured in said yoke, and the file- E. \V. BELL,
blade 7 ad justably secured on said shoulders O. T. GAINES.
