E. P. BENSON Oct. 20, 1925.
BINDER Filed April 10. 1923 Patented Got. 29, 192.5.
lihllTED STATES ilithSSG EDWIN r. BENSQN, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
BINDER.
Application filed April 10, 1923.
To all who 1n it may 0092007721:
Be it known that l, EDWIN l Benson, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to binders and has particular reference to one adapted to enclose a replaceable filler such as a block of memoranda sheets fastened together to itorm a tiller.
fill omcct of the invention is to provide iereby the filler may quickly and easily be 'nserted into and removed from the hinder.
Another object is to provide means whereby the tiller is securely held in place within the hinder although readily applicahle thereto and removable therefrom.
A still further object to provide a tiller g ipping nien'iber which permits the achieve ent of the above named objects while being at the same time economical to manufacture.
The invention is illustrated in the draw logs of which- Figure 1 is a perspective view or a hinder with filler inserted;
l igure 2 is a partial plan view of the hinderand filler showing the tiller gripping n ieinherg Figure 3 is a transverse the t ller and ignre 4- is a partial perspective of the hinder showing the end o: the tiller gripping member into which the filler is introsection througl'i gripping device and the binder;
It is of course clear that the form of the invention shown is only a preferred one of ma y in which it may be embodied for practic use and yet employ the ame inventive Serial No. 631,124.
In the preferred form shown in the drawings the invention relates to the use of a binder back and cover members 11 and 12 between which a removable filler or memoranda pad 13 is to be replaceably fastened. In practically every form in which they are supplied these pads are bound near an edge such as 14 by binding members such as sta pics 1?. Therefore on the upper and lower surfaces of the pad or filler near the bound end times elements form a series of projections or notation-noes. This condition is taken advantage of in the following manner.
The filler is held to the back 10 by the engagement therewith 01 a gripping member which in the term shown is a U-shaped channel plate 16 having limbs 17 and 18 converging; orvtapering toward each other at their outer ends. The plate 16 is fastened to the back 10 by any suitable ans such as rivets 19. At one end each or the plates 17 and 18- are flared out as shown at 9.0 and 21 to facilitate the insertionot the filler.
In order more eiiectively to avail myself of the projections on the tiller 13 whereby they may be made to assist in holding the filler in place on the binder i prefer to hend back the outer edcjes of the limbs 1'? and 18 as shown at and to form a rib or shoulder hack of which lie the projections on the tiller so that the tiller is ell-actively held from slipping; out of the gripping element 16 and can only be removed by slipping the filler laterally out 01. the gripping element. This gripping member with the limbs 17 and 18 and ribs 22 and 23 is formed of one piece of material so that the economy of its manufacture is greatly enhanced.
I claim:
A. filler gripping member which includes a channel plate having limbs to engage a filler. and integrally formed right angular projections on the inner faces of the limbs projections on the bound end surfaces of the filler to be directly engaged against the right angular projections on the limbs.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
EDWIN P. BENSON.
