FREDERICK W. THORNE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
STRAP AND FASTENING.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. THORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Straps and Fastenings,
. of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. 7
The purpose of this invention is to provide an improved box fastening device comprising a metal strap and a securing device for the ends of the strap, affording greater security against accidental disengagement or slippage than the devices heretofore employed. It consists in the elements and features of construction shown and described as indicated in the claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a partly sectional side elevation of a-box secured by the device embodying this invention, section being made longitudinally of the strap through the device which secures the ends. V
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank from which the securing device is formed.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the securing device partly folded up as provided for use.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view similar to the sectional portion of Fig. 1, showing a modification of the securing device.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are views similar to Figs. 2, 3 and 4:, showing the modification presented in Fig. 5.
Figs. 9, 10, 11 and 12 are views similar to Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, showing another modification.
In the drawings, A represents the box to be secured, B the metal strap for encompassing the box, C is the fastening device for securing the ends of the strap. The fastening device, C, is made of a metal sheet or plate, comprising a central body portion, 0, and two pairs of lateral wings, c c and c 0 the two wings of each pair being formed projecting from opposite lateral edges of one end portion of the body, 0, of the device, C, and the two pairs of wings being spaced apart from each other longitudinally of the body by a distance which is preferably not greatly in excess of the thickness of the strap, and in practice is desirably about twice that thickness, though it may be slightly less or slightly more with- Specification of Letters-Patent. Patented luayls, 1920, Application filed May 9, 1919. Serial No. 295,969.
out materially affecting the utility or security of the fastening.
In using this device the initial or first secured end, 6 of the strap, B, islodged main body of the strap runs to encircle the box. The strap having been passed around the box, the opposite end portion, 6 is also lodged between the wings, and the first pair of wings, a, 0 are folded crosswise of the body embracing the two plies of strap lodged between the wings. The strap may be now drawn tight by any suitable appliance provided for the purpose, and the second end is then folded back upon itself over the transversely-folded wings, c c and is lodged upon the previously lodged ply of the strap between the two wings, c c and these two wings are then folded transversely to embrace the three plies of the strap which are now lodged between them. By reason of the short distance between the two pairs of wings, as seen at the aperture, 0 the folding down of the second pair of wings, 0 c crosswise of the strap plies lodged between them and the clenching of thenrr by a hammer, as will be the usual method, causes the second strap end which has been folded over the wings, 0 0 to be bent sharply, or substantially at right angles, around the inner edge of these wings, and again sharply nearly at a right angle around the edge of the overlapped wings, 0 at least to a nearly right/Tangle bend, serving very effectively to defeat the slipping of the strap under strain to which it may be thereafter exposed in the handling of the box. The folding of the second pair of wings, c 0 over the final end of the strap, operates to prevent that end from being accidentally folded back so as to be released from the holding effect of the right-angle folds by which it embraces the wings, c 0
For certain purposes and in certain situa tions it will be found desirable to provide the securing device with means for engaging the reflexed end, 6 of the strap, B, more perfectly to insure it against being withdrawn, as conceivably might happen when the tie is used for securing a soft package, as a cotton bale, which might permit said reflexed end to be bowed downward away from the securing devlce and into the substance of the package upon extreme longitudinal stress wings, c 0 back or down and toward each other to embrace the reflexed end, 5 of the strap, B, as shown in Fig. 5, this being done before the strap with the clip attached is applied upon the box or package to be secured.
In the form shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8,
the expedient for additionally securing this reflexed end, 6 consists in providing a slot, 0 in the body, 0-, which is for that purpose extended to the left a sufficient distance beyond the transverse zone of the wings, c 0 the end, 6 of the strap being inserted through this slot from the under side before the strap is folded around the body for lodgment between the wings, 0 0 and c 0 as shown in the several figures of the drawings.
, I claim:
1. A box I securing device comprising a metal strap adapted to encompass the box, and a securing device for engagement of both end portions of the strap, said securing device comprising a body portion substantially the width of the strap, and two pairs of laterally-projecting wings foldable crosswise of the strap to embrace it, the first pair of wings projecting from opposite side edges of the body portion at one end thereof, the strap having one end portion lodged between said first pair of wings and folded back about the opposite end of the body portion under the latter, the opposite end por tion of the strap being lodged between said first pair of wings, said wings being folded transversely of the body to embrace both plies of the strap lodged between the wings, the second mentioned end portion of the strap being folded back upon itself over the transversely folded first pair of wings, and lodged between the second pair, said second pair of wings being folded transversely for embracing the three plies of strap lodged between them.
2. The strap-securing device described comprising a body and two pairs of lateral wings projecting from the body, the first pair of wings projecting from opposite side edges of one end portion of the body, and the second pair projecting from opposite side edges of the opposite end portion, said two pairs being spaced apart from each other longitudinally of the body a distance very slightly exceeding the thickness of the strap, the body having means at the opposite side from the first pair of wings for engaging the strap.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Chicago, Illinois, this 6th day of May, 1919.
