IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,696, dated October 6, 1874 application filed March 31, 1874.

A represents the buggy-body; B, the rear seat; and C, `the front seat. y The rear seat B is secured to a cross-bar, BQ at each end. Near each end of each cross-bar B', on the under side, is secured a semi-spherical socket, a, in which a ball, b, is held, said ball resting in a longitudinally-grooved rail, D, secured to ,the side of the body A. The seat B is thus supported bythe balls b b, t/wo at each end, and is movable on the rails D D.` The sockets or seats a a for conning the balls may be made any suitable shape, as may be desired. From the inner side of each socket a extends a plate or bar, c downward to the bottom of the rail or way D, where the lower'end of said plate is bent under the rail to hold the seat to the same. In the two cross-bars B' B a shaft, d, has its bearings, and upon each end of said shaft is an eccentric, c', which operates a sliding plate or bar, E, confined to the inner side of the cross-bar B by screws passing through vertical slots in the plate. rIhe plate or bar E is forked, and the ends of the prongs bent under the rails D. In the center of the shaft d is secured a lever, d', as shown, said shaft and leverbeing arranged under the seat B.
By turning the lever d forward the eccentrics t' 11 will move the plates E upward, so as to bind on the bottom of the rails, and thus hold the seat; and, by turning the lever d downward, the plates are loosened, and the seat can be moved forward or backward, as desired.
The front seat C is hinged to the bottom of the body A by means of a single leg, Gr, hinged to the front edge of the seat. Each end of this leg has a crank-arm, e, on each side, placed in boxes or loops e on the seat and in the bottom of the body, so that the seat can be easily shifted to be .used as a front seat, and as a childrens seat, or be placed under the back seat B when the same is moved forward. At each end\of the seat G is hinged a handle, H,- the rear part of which is, by a pivoted rod, f, connected with a slide, I, moving in boxes or guides I. Each slide I is at its outer end provided or formed with a foot, J, having a downward projection, h, at the heel, and an upward projection, It', at the toe. the slides I are, bymeans of bent arms m m, one with each end of a lever, K, pivoted to the under side of the seat 0.
By turning either handle Hvdownward upon the seat the feet J J are drawn inward under the seat, and by turning either handle upward and outward both feet are thrown out beyond the edges of the seat 5 and when in this latter position they t upon the rails D D at their front ends, and under hooks or lips n n on the same, the projections h h on the feet preventing any lateral movement of the seat.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the body A and seat B B', of the grooved ways D D, balls b b, and ball-seats a a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The shaft d, provided with lever d and The inner ends of eocentries i z', in combination with the slotted plates E E, seat B B', and rails D D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with the body A and seat C, of the single central leg G, provided with crank-arms e e at each end, and the boxes e e', substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The pvoted lever K and arms m m, in
combination with the slides I, rods j', and handles H, for the purposes set forth.
