A. J. KENNEDY SOF I COLLAR AND NECKTIE SUPPORT Filed Nov. 8, 1923 Patented Sept. 29, 1925 ,ANDREWJ. KENNEDY, or 'eLnNcon, mammal SOFT-COLLAR AND NECKT'IE surroie'r.
Application filed November 8,1923 Serial No. 673,409.
' To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glencoe, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Soft-Collar and Necktie-Supports, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for maintaining the correct shape and position of soft collars and ties on the person of the wearer; Soft and so-called semi-soft collars, at present extensively worn, are more comfortable than stiff collars, but they possess a quite serious fault in a tendency to sag and droop in front, whichfault is not cured by drawing and tying the neck-tie ti 'htly through the collar, because the knot of-thetie-"itself, especially in the 'caseof knitted. ties, soon slips and allows both the collar 'and 'the tie-"to sag downwardly, often ex posing the collar button and producing an unsightlyappearance: And even where the two depending folds of I the tie may be fastened together bya scarf-pin, the knot either slips down or the tie bulges forwardly tofan objectionable extent.
-The3mainbbject of this invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and easily manipulated deviceengageable with the "'frontcollar 1 button and beneath the front folds of the collar, by the use of which the above-mentioned faults may be eliminated and thecorre'ct formand position of both the collar and tie on the person of the wearer maintained. Another object is to provide a device ofthe character specified that may readily be applied. and removed with the 4 operative -position, shall be completely concealed-fromview. Another object is to provide a device for the purposes stated that shall. use the frontcollarwbutton'as a sup port for preventing sagging of. both the collar and the tie; and still another object is toprovide a device affording a positive hold on the knot of the tie in such a manner as to make it impossible for the latter to either sag orslip downwardly or bulge forwardly.
companying drawing, wherein I have illus- Other objects and attendant advantages trated one practical form and embodiment of the principle of the invention, and in which.-" p Fig. 1- is. a front elevation showing my improved device (concealed and hence appearing in dotted lines) applied to a soft collar'and four-in-handneck-tie on the neck of-the wearer, and'illustrating the manner 1n which it supports both the collar and tie, against-drooping; i
Fig. '2 is a view similar to Fig; 1, with the tie omitted to better show how the device is supported on the neck of the front collar button; a
Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of the device removed from the collar and tie;
F ig.- 4 is a top plan .view of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a further enlarged section on the line 55 of Fig; 3. 1
Referring to the drawing 0 designates what maybe assumed'to representeither asoft or a. semi-soft collar, and T an ordinary neck-tie of the four-in-hand variety; bothshown-in position on the neck of the wearer in Fig. 1. B designates theusual front collar button on which the meeting ends of the inner collar band are buttoned, in lapping relation.
Describing now my improved collar and tie support, shownin isolated detail in Figs. 3, land 5, this includes a yoke, comprising a central substantially'fiat body member 6,- and a pair of symmetrically upwardly and outwardly curved arms 7'that, as shown in tyare also rearwardly curved to conform substantially to the curve of the front portion of the upper edge of the collar when v the latter is on the neck of the wearer. This collar and .tiein-place, and that, when in yoke may, of course, be made of any suitable I material, but I contemplate the use of the substance known to the trade as pyralin for this element of the device. Preferably, and as herein shown, the rear side of the body 6 is formed with a vertical countersink 8, in which is fitted a stem or post 9, preferably a fiat strip of steel, brass, orany other suitable metal or material. The body 6 and post 9 are apertured to receive a clamp-bolt 10 and knurled nut 11 for securely uniting the yoke and post, and the latter is formed at its lowerend with a V-shaped notch 12 of a size proper to fit and ride on the neck of-the collar button just in rear of the head of the latter; To make the device adjustable to varying post 9 is stepped on theneck of the collar button, and the two arms 7 of the yoke are passed beneath the two front folds of the collar and effectively hold the 'lattter up in lace. When the neck-tie is tied, the device is entirely concealed from view, as clearly shown in 1.
. An important adjunct ofjthe device, in
the referred form shown, consists of a forwardly and upwardly projecting pin or spur 14,that is conveniently and preferably made in one with the bolt 10. This pin or spur pierces the knot of the tie from the rear, and serves to hold the knot up in correct position between the opposed ends of the front folds of the collar and completely the space between said ends and hid ing. t e collar button.
The device isreadily applied and removed by the thumb and fore-finger of thewearer after the collar and tie have been applied by simply drawing the knot of the tie forwardly temporarily and slipping and positioning the device'behind it. When it is in place it not only supports both the collar and the tie in neat and trim position against sagging downwardly, but the pin or spur 14: also holds. the tie against bu vging forwardly in a manner very common when the'knot "of the tie is tied and drawn very tightly through thecollar. v y
By. loosening the nut 11 and adjusting the post 9 upwardly or downwardly rela.
tively to the yoke, the device may. be made totit equallyv well, low, high and intermediate heights of collars.
M mfestly minor changes of form and structure. may be made without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof. Hence, I reserve all such variations and modifications as fall within the spirit and purview of the appended. claims.
