N. D FRISBIE.
HOLDER FOR SOFT COLLARS.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.20.I921- Patented June 28, 1921.
S vwe ntoz WE 915 071 llfi'zlgbje UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON D. FRISBIE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNO'R OI ONE-HALF 'I'O WILLIAM E.
SEWELL, DETROIT, MICHIGAN. .7
HOLDER FOR SOFT DOLLARS,
Specificationiof Letterslatent.
Application filed January an, 1921. serial No. 433,611.
To all whom it may 00 12 0cm:
Be it known that 'L'Nnnson D. a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Soft Collars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 1
This invention relates to a holder for soft collars, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device that may be easily and quickly placed in engagement with a collar button and attached to the flaps'or peaks of a soft collar to hold the flaps in proximity to each other and the collar in proper form, especially about a tie.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hold-down device for collars that cannot become accidentally displaced; that is applicable to various styles of soft collars and eliminates button holes and collar flaps, and which will present a neat appearance when a tie is properly placed in the collar.
The above and other objects are attained by a construction that will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder in position relative to a collar, showing the necktie in dash lines;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a collar showing a button and the device in elevation, with one of the arms of the device in section, and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device relative to a portion of the collar button.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a conventional form of soft collar having overlapping ends 2 provided with button holes 3 for an ordinary collar button 4. The soft collar 1 has flaps or peaks 5, and a four-in-hand or other style of necktie 6 is adapted to be placed in the soft collar and tied in the usual manner.
My holding device is made of a piece of wire or other material that is semi-rigid and adapted to have portions thereof sprung, if necessary, and the piece of wire may be finished to present a neat appearance, especially portions thereof that will be exposed. The piece of wire material is bent to provide an eye 7, a shank 8 and diverging arms 9 having hooks or bills 10. The shank 8 is com- F insane;
posed of the parallel inner ends of the arms 9 and said arms extend in opposite directions at an -obtuse angle to the. shank 8.
Slidable on the shank 8 is a sleeve 11 havinga notched tongue 12 at its inner end and onits front face with the notch 13 in its lower end, so that aftertheeye 7 is placed on the collar button 4, the sleeve 11 maybe lowered on the shank 8 until the tongue 12 engages behind the button head 1% with the notch 13 receiving the shank of the button 4:- With the sleeve 11 raised on the shank 8 and the upper end of the sleeve engaging the arms 9 there is sufiicient clearance at the eye 7 to permit of the eye being fitted over the button head 14, and the eye may be slightly sprung when placing the device in position. This is accomplished after the tie 6 has been tied and held in a raised position to permit of the device being fitted on the collar button, or the device may be placed in position on the button prior to knotting the tie.
Assuming that the eye 7 has been placed over the button head 14 the sleeve 11 is lowered so that the tongue 12 will engage behind the button head, as previously mentioned. The hooks 10 of the arms 9 are then caught in theflaps 5 to draw the flaps close together, as shown in Fig. 1. Then the tie may be lowered in front of the device so that only the ends of the arms 9 are visible.
Patented June 28, 1921.
With some styles of ties the ends of the arms 9 and the complete device will be in- Visible, and it is apparent that the device will cooperate with the tie in maintaining the soft collar in proper shape on a shirt and about a neck. I
The hooks 10 of the arms 9 are made exceedingly small so that the collar flaps will not be unduly pierced or injured by repeated use of the device, and since the device is made of wire it is possible to bend the arms 9 at desired angles for engaging collars of various styles, so that a soft collar will be properly positioned about a neck, and prevented from sagging relative to a necktie. Furthermore, the eye 7 fitting on the button a and the tongue 12 extending behind the button head 14 will prevent the ends 2 of the collar from becoming accidentally unbuttoned, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the construction of the device is susceptible to such changes as are permissible by the appended claims.
What I claim is ,7
1. A collar holder comprising an eye.
adapted to fit on a collar button, a shank carried by said eye and terminating in arms adapted to engage collar flaps, and means slidable on said shank-adapted to engage behind a collar button head toprevent dis-. placement of the eye relative to the button.
7 2. A collar holder as in claim 1,characterized by said means being in the, form of a j sleeve having a notched tongue toengage.
the shank of the collar button. a 3. A collar holder made of a piece of material bent to provide a button engaging eye, a shank, and collar engaging arms, and
saideye; W a
4. A collar holder comprising an eye adapted to fit on a collar button, means slidable' relative to saideye adapted to ena sleeve slidable on theshank and having its sliding movement limited by said arms and NELsoN rnismn- Witnesses: I H I I LEWIS'E. FLANDERS, KARL H. BUT ER. Q
