Description

Feb. 19,1935.
.1. A. DRINKWATER COLLAR FLAP AND NECKTIE HOLDER Filed Sept. '11, 1933 I v-(w Patented Feb. 19, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to an article of manufacture particularly adapted for holding the flap of shirt collars in proper position. In conjunction with the structure for accomplishing the foregoing object there is incorporated in the-device facilities for embracing the neck-tie of the wearer for the purpose of preventing excessive outward bulging of the tie from the shirt.
The objects sought in the invention are to provide a simple, effective and easily applied collar flap fastener, one which will firmly hold the flaps down but which will not deface or injure them as there are required no holes to be made in the fabric, as is the case with the safety-pin type of fastener. Y
The device comprises a bar, preferably butnot necessarily of tubular form, on the ends of which and integral therewith are the inner or immovable jaw portions, respectively, of two clasps which grip the flaps under a yielding tension.
The neck-tie holder portion of the device isof arcuate form and is pivoted on one of its ends to the tubular bar part of the device and swings from itspivotal point to embrace the tie, the free end of the holder or binder being notched to engage the bar portion and become locked thereto.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawing in which I'use like reference characters to identify similar parts in all the different views of the drawing.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the device;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the flap-holder portion of the device, the tie binder being removed;
Fig. 4 shows the form of the blank from which the base portion of the device is made;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the lower jaws of the clasp members, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the application of the device.
Referring to the drawing, C represents a detached, soft collar for mens neck-wear, and Ca, Ca the flaps of the collar. The device, of course, is fully as applicable for shirts having attached collars.
In Fig. 3 I show the holder in its simplest form.- that of a collar flap fastener the base or principal element in which is shown in blank form in Fig. 4.
When brought into its ultimate shape by the use of proper forming dies, this base portion comprises an intermediate bar 1, of tubular form with a flat jaw portion 2 at each end thereof. Thejaw portion is slightly raised at its marginal'part forming a stiffening flange 2a and at the extreme ends are upturned points 2b which assist in securing a firm hold on the fabric flaps but which are not intended to be sharp enough to puncture the cloth.
Extending from the sides of the jaws are cars 3 in which are holes 4. In these holes is a pin 5 around which is a torsional spring 6 one end of which engages the jaw 2 and the other end the jaw 7 which is the outer or movable element of each clasp.
Jaw 7 has ears 8 in which are holes 9, the pin 5 operating in these holes also. The spring 6 tends to keep the jaws in each clasp in mutual engagement so that when embracing a collar flap a yielding tension is applied to them.
In holes 10 in the bar 1 is a pin 11, swingingly mounted on which is an arcuate shape neck-tie binder member 12. The free end of this'member (12) has a notch 13 cut in itand when swung into closed position this end passes into the cut out portion a in the bar 1, the notch engaging the lip 14 securely locking the binder on the bar. It will be understood that the binder member, when about to enter the opening a is slightly sprung, endwise, the bevelled end first engaging the lip 14 before the end finally passes into the opening.
The binder 12 may, if desired carry some ornament, as an engraved plate, a stone or other embellishment, E. Fig. 6 shows the device as it appears on the collar and neck-tie of a wearer. In case the person wears a bow tie the neck-tie binder may be removed from the bar by withdrawing the pin 11 and the end of the binder from opening b.
The ease with which the article can be attached and detached from the collar flaps and the necktie enclosed by the binder are its appealing features.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a base member having an intermediate portion circular in cross-section, a substantially flat jaw made integral with said portion disposed on each end thereof, an opening in said intermediate portion, near one endthereof, an arcuate binder member pivotally secured in said opening, means on the free end of said binder to lock it to said intermediate portion adjacent its opposite end, and ajaW mounted on each of said integrally formed jaws adapted to provide two operable clasps the jaws of which are yieldingly engageable.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base member having a tubular intermediate portion of slightly arcuate shape and having two openings disposed, respectively, adjacent its ends, of which is pivotally mounted in one of the opena flat portion extending from each end of said ings in said intermediate portion, a notched porintermediate portion, made integral therewith, tion on the free end of said binder member, and said fiat portion constituting the immovable jaw a lip adjacent the other of said openings adapted 5 of a clasp member, a movable jaw mounted on and to engage said notched portion and lock the free in yielding tension with each of said integrally end of said binder member to said base member. formed jaws, an arcuate binder member oneend JOHN A.
