Description

Sept. 20, 1932. F. B. PARSONS mmsmn CHAIN Filed Oct. 16. 1930 l atented Sept. 20,
UNITED- STATE I FRANK nrnnsoivs, or PLAINVILLE, con vno'ricuznzi ANTISKID CHAIN Applicationfild goctober 16,1930. SerialNo. 489,111.
My inventionrelates to the class of devices equipped for temporary attachment to trac- 'tion Wheels to prevent slipping, and j more V partioularlyto such'devices as embody lengthwise members in theform of chains, andc'ros's wise members secured at intervals to and connecting said lengthw se members and an object of my invention, among others, isthe'" v provision of means whereby cross'members of standard construction maybe provided with means for ready attachment to detachment from the lengthwise members.
One form of an attaching means embodying my invention, and'in the construction and use of Whichthe objects herein set out,
as well as others, may be attained, is illus trated in the accompanying drawing, "in which- Figure 1 is a view of the ends-of a cross chain equipped with my improvedholder.
Figure 2 is a side'view of the same. Figure dis a view looking "at the opposite side of the chain from that shown in Figure 1. Figure 4 is a detail View showing the man ner of inserting my improved holder in place. I
. chain and are then bent down by a tool usually supplied for the purpose to hold them in place. In fact, this" form 0]": construction of the end members of a cross-link has come to be standard equipment.
It is thepurpose ofmypresent invention f to make use of this standard form of equip-' ment and to so constructmy improved holder that it may be readily'attached to the end members of the cr-oss'elink with little diifi- 3 culty.
To this end'I provide a'snap holder pref erably made of thin resilient metal and comprising a base'and a spring tongue 9.. The tongue is bent backwardlyito overlie the base, and as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The base comprises a'pad 10 at itsfront tdacComplish this purpose;
end of a' width to overlie the under portions PATENT oFFicEL i of'thehooks 8 to retain theholder inplace. I
:Theibas e isbent downwardly at aipoi nt be tweenthe pad l0 and a tongue'support 11 comprising the rear end of the base. Ears 12 fare formed on opposite sides of the support :11 to" underlie the branches 13 of the hooks,
and the bend between the base andthe tongue 9f'is narrowed to permit the-tongue topass upwardly between the branches 13. The tongue is broadened to a width substantially that of the pad 10, thereby overlying the branches 13.
1 This structure when viweaeem the end p'resentsa groove atoppositeedges of the' holder, the upper sides of the grooves being constituted by the edges oft-he tongue 9 and a the lower parts of the grooves being conlstituted the pad 10 and ears 12. This enables the holderfto be inserted by a move- 7 ment lengthwiseof the branches-13, which branches' m ay be slightly spread apart as shown in Figure 5 to permit insertion of the holderand may then-be closed toward each other into their normal positions and in which positions the holder, will; be securely retained in-place. Thebase of the holder f is preferably of suchv length that its front edge willnnderlie the iside part of the linkwj with which the-hook is engaged, and as shown inFigure 2 of the drawing; ,while therear end of the base, which also'constitutesfthe rear end of the holder, this'being the .bend
attached; 1 j A. It will'be seen from this description, taken in connection withthe accompanying drawing, that Ihave provided a snap holder between. the tongue and the"ba se, wil1 lie substantially against the link ltjof the cross 7 'chainto which the end member or hookB is whioh may be readily secured [to the hook I of the cross member, of an anti-skid chain with the use of tools, as pliers," readily "at hand. The-holder of such shape and form I that whenfin place it will readily inaintain,
its position without any shapin'gof the hooks ei g hm the tongue 9 is preferably :such that whe'n 'li t ng e bent downwardlytit will pass i0 -the side -part'ota with' whi'ch- -th .hb kg are to be engaged. In short, my improved holder converts a hook of standard construction into a snap hook.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out. i
I claim: j I V 1. A snap holder for use with anattaching hook comprising spaced branches having backturned open hooks at one end, said holder comprising a base and a backturned spring tongue both having lateral extensions oppositely disposed to form, when viewed lengthwise of the holder, grooves opposite edges thereof to receive the branches of said attaching hook when the latter are closed to normal positions, said base being adapted to project through the hook between said branches whereby the opposite ends of the base rest against the hook on opposite sides thereof.
2. A snap holder for use with an attaching hook comprising spaced branches having backturned open hooks at one end, said holder comprising a base including a broadened pad and extended ears said base being adapted to project through the hook between said branches, whereby the opposite ends of the base rest against the hook on opposite sides thereof, and a spring tongue backbetween said branches and having one end offset from the plane of the opposite end, whereby said opposite ends of the base rest against the hook on opposite sides thereof being of a length to engage the hooks and the link to which the hooks are attached to prevent substantial endwise movement of the holder.
5. A snap holder for use with an attaching hook comprising spaced branches having backturned open hooks at one end, said holder comprising a base having an offset portion whereby the base is adapted to pro ject through a hook between said branches from one side to the other side thereof, clips projecting laterally from the base to engage'a hook, a bend in the end of the base adapted to be located between the side members of a hook, and a spring tongue extending from said bend and adapted to lie against said side of the hook at the extreme end of the base.
FRANK B. PARSONS.
turned to engage underneath the ends of the hooks when the holder is slipped into position between the branches of an attaching hook.
3. A snap holder for use with an attaching hook comprising spaced branches having backturned open hooks at one end, said ho der comprising a base including abroadened pad and extended ears said base being adapted to project through the hook between said branches, whereby the opposite ends of the base rest against the hook on opposite]- sides thereof, and aspring tongue backturned to engage underneath the ends of the hooks to which the holder is secured, said tonguebeing broadened to engage the side members of the hook near the base of the tongue. v a a 4. A snap holder for'use with an attaching hook comprising spaced branches .having backturned open hooks at one end, said holder comprising a base including a broadened pad and a tongue support, aback-turned spring tongue projecting from said support, the bend between said tongue and support being narrowed to provide notches to receive the branches of an attaching hook, said base beingadaptedto project through the hook
