Application filed August 6, 1920. Serial No. 401,582.-
To all whom it may concern. In the accompanying drawing, I have il- Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. The tappet valve 25 having means for securing one or -more as illustrated consists of a valve member wrenches thereto when not in use to prevent having a head (not shown) and stem 5, a the same from becoming detached and lost bearing sleeve 6, a tappet member 7 slidably from the holding member. and rotatably mounted in the sleeve and car- A further object of this invention is to rying a round flat head (not shown) for con- 30 provide a tool of the class described having tact with a valve shaft cam (not shown), an a holding member of angular shape having adjustingscrewShavingthreaded engagement means on one arm thereof for acljustably with the upper end of the member 7 and profixedly connecting one wrench thereto and vided with a nut head 9, and a lock nut 10 having means on the other end thereof for Securing the screw in adjusted position. Tappet valves of 4 to provide a tool of the class described this type are set so that there will be a very which will be readily adjustable and capable slight clearance between the end of stem 5 of withstanding the strain to which such a and the head 9 of the screw 8 when the lowertool is subjected. most portion of the valve cam shaft is in With the above and other objects in View contact with the head on the lower end of 45 which will appear as the description prothe member 7.
ceecls, my invention resides in the novel con- Heretofore it has been necessary for two struction, combination and arrangement of persons to make the adjustment, each person parts substantially as hereinafter described having a wrench, one to engage the flat faces and more particularly defined by the ap- 11 of member 7 and the other to engage 50 pended claims, it being understood that such the head of screw 8, and then one of the changes in the precise embodiment of the persons uses another wrench to turn the lock hereindisclosed invention may be made as nut 10 to secure the parts in adjusted posicome within the scope of the claims. tion. With the present device, one person 18 has the long arm 16 thereof slotted as at,
17 through which slot the wrench 14 is insertable, and the upper portion 18 of the arm 16 is preferably of bendable spring material and the block 19 at the inner termination of the slot 17 is preferably of a thickness slightly less than that of the wrench 14.
This construction is such as to permit the free sliding movement of the wrench 14 I within the slot 17 and at the same time provide means for rigidly securing the wrench 14 therein in any desired position, which means consists of a screw bolt 20 carried by the lower portion 21 of the member 13 and passing upwardly through the portion 18 and provided with a binding nut 22. With this construction, as will be readily seen, the nut 22 is screwed down to draw the end of portion 18 toward the portion 21, which will firmly bind or clamp the wrench 14 therebetween. The member 13 is preferably formed of but three pieces, the lower piece 21 being of heavy material and of substantially L shape, the block 19 secured to the portion 21 at the angle thereof, and the strip 18 which is secured to the block 19 and held spaced from the long arm of the portion 21 to form the slot 17.
The short arm 23 of the holding member has pivotally secured thereto, and extending downwardly in opposite direction from the screw 20, a screw 24 upon which the wrench 15 is adjustably secured by projecting the screw between a threaded opening'25. This construction permits the wrench 14 to be adjustably spaced from the member 13, as will be readily apparent, and consequently adjustably spaced sidewise with respect to the wrench 15. All of the wrenches em ployed in connection with my improved tool are provided with a centrally threaded opening 25 to permit the securement of the same upon the screw 24 when not in use as best shown in Fig. 3, so that the wrenches will not become lost from the holder.
In use, the wrench 15 is secured upon the screw 24 in the proper relation with respect to the holding member and wrench 14 is then inserted through the slot 17 with the nut 22 loose upon the screw 20, when the wrench 14 is manipulated to obtain the proper adjustment of the adjusting screw 8. When the proper adjustment is obtained the nut 22 is screwed down to firmly bind the wrench 14 in'the position it occupies when the adjustment is obtained. With the wrenches 14 and 15 thus firmly secured in their position of adjustment, engaging the flat faces of the member 7 and the head 9 of the screw 8, the third wrench 12 is inserted therebetween to tighten the lock nut 10 and lock the screw 8 in its position of adjustment.
As will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of this character appertains, by reason of the wrenches 14 and 15 being capable of adjustment in sidewise spaced relation and of adjustment to various angles with respect to each other the tool may be readily manipulated to operate in the most efficient manner.
hat I claim as my invention is:
