ADJUSTABLE TAPPET-WBENCH.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented July 19, 1921.
Application filed November 29, 1920. Serial No. 427,147.
T 0 all 1021077! it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ror P. Rnrnonns, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Harrisonville, county or Cass, State of Mis soari. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Tappet- \Vrenches, of which the following is a complcte specification. 1 I
This invention relates to a tool for use in adjusting the liftof tappet valves ofexplosive engines, and has for its objcctto produce a device of this character by which the tappet stem and the plunger ma be immovably held against turning and including: provision for effecting a relatively fine ad justment oi the tappet stem and maintain inn such adjustment during the operation of tightening the lock nut found in connection therewith.
Another object is to produce a device of this character of simple, strong, durable,
efficient and inexpensive construction: and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompan iing drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as it will appear when in use in connection with the adjustment of a lock nut;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line II--Il of Fig. 1, to more clearly illustrate the ball and socket and swivel connections of one of the members of the device;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-J11 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a section on the, line IV-IV of Fig. 3.
In the said drawing, where like reference characters identify corresponding parts in all of the figures, 1 and .2 constitute'the handles ot the device, the former being bifurcated at one of its ends as at 3, for the reception between the ears thus formed of the arm 2, and the two members are secured in pivotal relation by means of a pivot pin 4.
At its opposite end the handle 1 is pro vided with an L-shaped jaw 5, andpivoted thereto by means of cross-links 6 is a simi lar, but movable jaw T of L-shape to correspond with the aw 5. the shank of said niovable jaw being provided with a threaded perforation for the reception of a set screw 8 provided with a thumb portion 9 at its outer end, the opposite end being adapted to bear against the side of the handle 1. By this arrangement the movable jaw, in combinationwith the immovable jaw, may be adjust ed to accommodate the squared end of tappet"'plunger 10 of an engine, not shown.
The handle :2 is provided with a pair of extensions 11 adapted to receive, l or pivotal action between them a wrench 12 mounted on a pivot pin 13. lhe wrench is termed of two members. a movable jaw 1i and a substantially fined jaw 15, havingtongue and groove relation, the tornier being provided with opposite grooves 16 and the latter hearing" a pair of spaced tongues 1?" For slidable interlocking engagement with the grooves 16. The face of the movable jaw being threaded as acid for the reception of a thumb nut Ill mounted on the jaw 15 witnin an opening 20 thereof.
Mounted in the free end oi the shank of the immovable jaw 15 with a hall and socket connection 21 is a set screw 25% provided with a thumb portion 23. The set screw is threaded through a swivel nut El mounted between the extensions ll oi handle 2, and is free for pivotal action on its trunnions :25. It will be understood that after the jaws 5 and (i are set to firmly grip the squared end of the plunger 10, that the jaws of the wrench 1:2 will be adjusted to grip the squared head :20 on the upper end of a threaded tappet stem 27, which is screwed into the plunger 10, as customary, and that in order to secure a final and accurate adjustment and ill 11y hold the plunger and tappet in their relative positions while the lock nut 98 of the tappet is being: adjusted, the set screw will he turned to more securely hold the tappet from movement by leverage action.
A recapitulation of the ope mtion ot' the invention is believed to be unnecessary, other than to state that it will be understood that the adjustments of the loclr nut must he carried out through the use of an ordinary wrench or other tool, and that the ball and socket and swivel ,cohnectirm of set screw 22 is provided in order that said screw, when turned may client the final adjustment of the tappet and retain it in adjusted position, while the tool as a whole operates to maintain the parts in finely adjusted relation while the lock nut :28 is tightened by the use of a separate tool.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a-device of the character set forth which possesses all the features of advantage named, and While I have described and illustrated the pres ferred embodiment of the same, I reserve the right to all' changes properly falling within thespirit and scope of the appended claims. 7 V
hat I claim is 1. In a tool of the character described, a pair of handles bearing apivoted relation to each other, one of said handles being provided at its outer end with a pair of jaws, and a wrench carried by the companion handle, and means carried by said second handle for operating the wrench, said handles being so proportioned that the wrench and jaws may be brought simultaneously into operative engagement with parts working about the same axis.
2. In a tool of the character described, a
pair of handles bearing a pivoted relation to each other, one of said handles being provided at its outer end with a pair of jaws; the companion handle being provided with a pair of extensions, a wrench adapted to have a pivotal connection with said extensions; and means separate from. said pivotal point for imparting pivotal action to the wrench and retaining it in any predetermined position of adjustment.
3. In a tool of the character described, a pair of handles bearing a pivoted relation to each other, one of said handles being provided at its outer end with an immovable jaw having a movable jaw pivoted thereto,
and means for locking the movable jaw against outward movement; the companion handle being provided with a wrench at its outer end and being so proportioned that its wrench may be brought simultaneously with said jaws into operative engagement with parts working about the same axis.
4:. In a tool of the character described, a pair of handles bearing a pivoted relation to each other, one of said handles being provided at its outer end with an immovable jaw having a movable jaw pivoted thereto, and means for locking the movable jaw against outward movement; the companion handle being provided with a wrench at its outer end. and means carried by said handle for operating said wrench.
5. In a tappet adjusting tool, a pair of handles bearing a pivoted relation to each other. one of said handles being formed with an immovable jaw at its outer end having a movable jaw pivoted thereto, and a set screw threaded in one end of the movable jaw and adapted to abut against the inner side of the handle; the companion handle being provided with a pair of extensions. a wrench pivoted bet-ween said extension, means having a ball and socket connection with said wrench for operating the latter.
In witness whereof I afiix my signature.
