Description

Patented Sept. 22, 1925.

qIiASP.
Be; known that Leann QLS N, a itiZ. 11 ofllflexll ite :Sta a. 'e iding" t-iD'eniier; n the county of Denver and State of Colorado, ha I invent d (ce t n new and eisetu proveinents in Hasp s, of which the ing is a specification, reference being had to the.;, acc;ompanying drawings.
This invention relates to hasps, and the general object of the invention is to provide a very simple and effective form of hasp particularly designed for such boxes or cabinets as mechanics tool boxes where there is a lid which overhangs the front wall of the box.
A further object is to provide a device of this character comprising a member which is mounted upon the front wall of the box and which has a predetermined portion formed with a plurality of transverse apertures, and a portion which is attached to the overhanging part of the lid of the box which, when the lid is closed, embraces the first named portion and is adapted for the passage of a padlock.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a box with my improved hasp attached thereto, the lid being closed;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the front wall of the box with the hasp members in interlocked engagement, the screws which hold the lid member to the lid being in section;
Figure 4: is an under side plan View of the hasp member attached to the lid;
Figure 5 is a rear elevation thereof;
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates the front wall of a box and 11 the lid, the lid being provided with the longitudinally extending bead 12 at its front and transversely extending beads 13 at the side. Such lids as this are commonly found on the tool boxes of mechanics and in other situations.
My improved hasp is formed in two parts. The part illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 is intended to be applied to the overhanging portion of the bead 12 and comprises a plate 14 having at its middle portion a transverse 1y extending slot 15, the margins of this slot 15 being defined by depending walls 16 constituting outstanding ears and a transverse- 1y extending vertical web 17. this web being perforated, as at 18. Attaehedto thejfront @1 1 o th nxisa plate 1. flfh p a 1. i orm a it midd t pro ide a wa dly prai tine rr t beran po pn 20 Q'U ihaPG-d inli r i i e it on and e .v ch sid p th nr uberan poem "th .flplat is" perforated for the jpassage of Qlts 2 r by. th pl m y .b' hel t h front wall "10'. The protliberant-portion 20 has two apertures 22 and 23 in its opposite walls, one of these apertures being adapted to register with the aperture 18 when the lid is closed so as to permit a padlock to be passed through the apertures 18 and 22 to lock the lid. The other aperture 23 is to receive the hasp of the padlock when the padlock is not in use for locking purposes.
Inasmuch as the hasp of the padlock would interfere with any attempt to remove the screws 24 which engage the plate 14 with the top of the box, screws may be used for the purpose of holding the plate 14 to the overhanging margin of the box lid, but obvious ly bolts might be used in place of screws if desired, the bolts being set into the bead 12.
The use of this device will be obvious. WVhen the lid is closed, the depending walls 16 embrace the protuberant portion 20, permitting the hasp of a padlock to be passed through the two holes, locking the lid closed. When so passed through, it will be obvious that the lid cannot be shifted longitudinally and that there will not be enough play as to permit the lid to be readily wrenched off. The device is very simple, may be cheaply made, and readily applied.
I claim 1. A hasp of the character described comprising two coacting'members, one being formed to provide a plate having a protuberance U-shaped in cross section, the other member formed to provide a plate having a transversely extending slot extending from the back edge of the plate nearly to the front edge thereof, the slot being defined by two depending walls constituting ears, and a transverse web at the front of the plate, the ears being perforated and the protuberant portion of the first named member having perforations adapted to regis ter with the perforations in the second named member for the passage of the hasp of a padlock when the second named member embraces the protuberant portion of the first named member.
2. A hasp of the character described comprising two coacting members, one being formed to provide a plate having a protu berant portion U-shaped in cross section and the other formed to provide a plate, having two ears between which the protuberant portion is adapted to be inserted when the coacting members are brought together, the protuberant portion and said 'ears having alignable apertures for the passage of the haspof a padlock.
3. A hasp of the character described comprising two coacting members, one being formed to provide a plate having a medial, outwardly projecting, protuberant portion U-shaped in cross section, the side walls of said protuberant portion maving two sets of aligning apertures, the plate on each vside of the protuberant portion having bolt apertures, the second member comprising a plate having apertures for the passage of screws and formed with a slot extending from the rear edge of the plate nearly to the front thereof, the plate being formed with depending walls defining the sides and front of said slot, the lateral walls having aligning perforations adapted to align with certain of the perforations in the protuberant portion, the depending walls being shorter than the length of said protuberant portion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
AXEL OLSON.
