HERBERT DUNDERDALE, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DOOR-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT DUNDER- DALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the drawings herein. I
My invention pertains to door locking devices, and has reference more particularly to a lock device designed for usein connection with the rear edge of a sliding door.
The invention has for one of its principal objects the provision of vice of this character co-acting to draw the rear edge of the door sidewise against the doorway frame as the door is moved to closed position and thereby provide a tight closure at the rear of the door, and in which position the door is locked by the device against lateral or vertical movement.
Another object is to produce a simple and eflicient lock device ofthis character wherein binding of the parts is eliminated, and
which is cheaply constructed, easily applied,
and-facile and positive in its operation.
A further object is the provision of a lock device constructed to provide for, and to correct, in the closing movement of the door any sagging of the door which may be present.
These, together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear, or are incident to my invention, I attain by means of a construction illustrated in-preferred form, I
wherein Figure 1 represents a'horizontal sectional view illustrating the application of my improved door lock device to a :door;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the device along the line III-III of Fig. 2;.
Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the two co-acting lock members which together comprisethe lock'device; and i Fig. 5, represents a slightly modified form of my invention. i y
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 7 indicatesthe doorpost located at the side of the doorway, 8 the siding and 9 a fragmentary portion of a sliding door; the doorpost having a portion 7% thereof projecting outwardly beyond the siding '8 to provide a clearance between it and the door for the Specification of Letters Patent.

reception of my lock device, which latter operates to draw the rear edge 10 of the door tightly up against the projecting portion of the door post and locks the door against vertical and lateral movement when the door is closed.
The lock device, as shown, consists of a locking slide member A, and a receptive socket member B of elongated shape preferably secured to the siding closely adjacent to the projecting) portion 7 of the doorpost; the slide mem er being correspondingly inner face of the rear edge 10 of the door, and which comprises a base or attaching portion 11, having integrally formed therewith a neck 12 and a head 13 which extend into the) clearance between the door and siding.
The socket member B of the device is dis-.
posed in the clearance and comprises the central Web portion 19, attaching base flanges 15 formed with bolt holes 15 for the reception of the attaching bolts 16 which pass into the siding, and connecting side walls 14. The web portion 19 is longitudinally inclined inwardly from its wide open outer end to its inner end to provide an inner inclined face 21 and formed with a slot leading from said wide open end to a narrow terminal seat 18 adjacent the inner end of the member, the slot being inclined to said seat to form a slideway 18 for the neck 12 and having at each side thereof guiding flanges 14 extending outwardly from the seat to the wide open end and whose inner inclined faces are designed to to propconsidered important that the head 13 be of a length considerably less than the distance between the sidewalls 14 vent any contact whatever ofthe same, parthe neck travels in the slot or 1 in order to preticularly at either of the low or high .points of the slideway. In this Way the neck 12 cooperating with the slideway centers the door and looks it against vertical displacement, and the head in turn cooperating with the inclined face of the socket draws the door tightly against the doorpost or frame and holds it against lateral movement.
In practice, it is considered preferable, that when the door is closed, the rear edge 10 thereof should project over the restricted end 19 of the socket sufficiently enough to Having 'thus described vmy invention and D illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following 1. In a door closure and lock device, the combination of a socket member comprising a base and a socket portion having its outer end provided with awide opening disposed substantially at right-angles with reference to said base, said socket portion formed lon-' gitudinally with an inclined slot leading from said wide open end to providea relatively narrower terminal seat adjacent the inner end of the socket portion and having guide flanges extending outwardly from the seat to said open end at each side of the slot, and a relatively smaller sliding bolt member constructed and arranged to enter and pass through said open end for inward sliding travel in the slot to engage in said seat, said guide flanges inclined in an inward direction toward said base and 006perating with the slot to guide the bolt member in its inward travel to said seat.
2. In a door closure and lock device, the combination of a socket member comprising an'attaching base and an inclined socket portion having its outer end provided with a wide opening disposed substantially at rightangles ,with reference to said base, said socket portion having its. web partially formed longitudinally with an angular slot -leading from said wide open end to provide at its apex a relatively nafi'ower terminal seat in the inner end of the member and an inclined slideway extending intermediately of said wide outer opening and the narrow seat, that portion of the web bounding the slot constituting a flanged guide means having an inner inclined face, and a sliding bolt member adapted to enter and pass through said wide open end to said seat and comprising an attaching base having a head adapted to slidably engage said inner inclined face and an intermediate neck portion adapted to slidably engage said slideway in its travel to said seat. p
3. In a door 'closurefand lock device, the
, combination of an elongated socket member having an open outer end and comprising spaced upper faces, respectively,
' guide flanges member is seated.
a base and a central body portion having a part of its web cut away longitudinally to provide a seat adjacent its inner end and and lower guide flanges extending outwardly from the seat to said open outer end, the lower guide flange having an upwardly inclined face constituting a slideway to said seat and both of said flanges having inwardly inclined inner guide faces disposed substantially at right angles to said slideway, and a relatively smaller sliding bolt member constructed and arranged to enter and pass through said open outer end to said seat and comprising angularly disposed locking portions adapted to slidably engage said slideway and said inner guide substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
i. In a door closure and lock device, the combination with a sliding car door and car siding having a doorway opening therein, of a longitudinally disposed socket member secured to the car siding adjacent the rear end of said opening and having an open outer end disposed substantially at rightangles to said siding, said member comprising an attaching base portion having a part of its web recessed longitudinally and angularly to provide a restricted seat adjacent its inner end and spaced upper and lower guide flanges ex, tending in an outward direction from the seat to said outer openend, the lower guide flange having an upwardly inclined face constituting a slideway to said seat and said having inwardly inclined inner guide faces disposed substantially at right angles to said slideway and at each side thereof, and a sliding bolt member 'secured to the rear portion of the door and adapted to enter and pass through said outer open end to engage the seat, said member comprising horizontally and vertically disposed locking portions constructed and arranged for slidably engaging said slideway and said inner guide faces, respectively, the horizontal locking portion adapted to maintain the door against movement in a vertical plane and the vertical locking portion adapted to maintain the door against outward movement in a horizontal plane when said door frame and its a sliding door for said opening, said door frame provided with a door post projecting outwardly beyond the outer face of the frame to provide a clearance between the door and said frame; and a lock device 5.
