Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
JOHN OOLLEY, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,423, dated September 29, 1874; application tiled September 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN COLLEY, of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a notched plate fastened to one end of the hoop permanently, and receiving` the hook of the other end in its notch, and-having a bolt for fastening said hooked end, which swings around into the hook ou a pivot, and then slides lengthwise a little onto' a rivet, the end being notched to engage the rivet, and the hole for the pivot on which the bolt swings being slotted to allow the bolt to slide The two rivets are then headed down, so as to hold the bolt fast.
The essential object of the invention is to produce a tie which can be readily unfastened without injuring the hoop, so that it can be used again, which can be readily e'ected, in this case, by driving the bolt along the rivet by a little blow with a hammer and cold-chisel or other similar tool, so that the notch in the end will escape from the rivet, which will allow the bolt to swing around on the other rivet, and allow the end of the hoop hooked onto it to escape. y l
Figure l is a plan view of my improved baletie in the closed position. Fig. 2 is a crosssection taken on the line a: w, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the tie as when open for receiving the end of the hoop to be fastened.
A is the tie-plate, in which is a deep notch, B, and on each side of the notch is a strong rivet, C D. E is the bolt for fastening the hoop. It is held 011 one side of A by the rivets, one of which passes through the slot F, and the other enters the notch G in the end of the bolt when the latter is shoved along the plate after engaging the hook of the end of the hoop and swinging around into line With the rivet D. The band or hoop is permanently fastened above and around the part H of the plate A, and the other end hooks onto the bolt at I. The rivets are hammered down tight after the bolt is adjusted, to hold the band permanently against working loose, but not so fast as to prevent driving the bolt back With a hammer when it is required to unfasten the hoop. A head or flange, J is formed on one end of the bolt, to facilitate the driving of it back for unfastening it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The notched plate A, rivets O D, and slotted and notched bolt E, combined and arranged to form a bale-tie, substantially as specified.
JOHN COLLEY.
