LIFTING JACK.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ROBERT D. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklinand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is directed to improvements in lifting jacks particularly designed for use in connection with motor vehicles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a screw jack which possesses the necessary strength and stability wherein the parts necessary for rotating the screw to elevate the vehicle are reduced to a minimum.
A further object of the invention is to provide a jack so constructed that the ower for elevating the screw is centrally ocalized so as to enhance the stability, the power being derived from a lever movable in a horizontal plane and conveniently located for operation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a power lever for jacks which when not in use can be folded longitudinally of the jack to permitthe same to be stored in a comparatively small space.
1Vith these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts, and hereinafter to be fully described and pointed out in the In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device,

The jack comprises a base 1 and a vertical, preferably integral standard 2 provided with a longitudinal bore 3 in which is located for vertical movement the screw 4, the upper end of which is provided with the usual swivelly mounted head 5 for en 1923. Serial No. 644,544.

The bore 3 has its sides provided with diametrically disposed grooves 6 for slidably receiving the wings 7 of the screw, said wings serving to prevent the screw from rotating, but permitting the same to move vertically. The upper ends of the grooves 6 terminate in shoulders 8 which serve to limit the upward movement of the wings 7 and thus the screw 4. The screw 4 is of such length as to have 1ts upper end normally extended above the upper end of the standard '2 and threaded thereon is a feed nut 9 provided with peripheral teeth 10 and resultant notches 11. This nut bears upon the upper end of the standard 2 and is rotatable thereon to impart vertical movement tothe screw 4 in either direction when the power lever 12 is actuated in a manner to be hereinafter described.
This lever has its inner end provided with a loop 13, the side arms 14 of which receiving therebetween the upper end of the standard 2. The loop has its forward end terminating in a downwardly extending angularly disposed stirrup 15, which is in open communication with the loop. The side arms 14 are bowed outwardly so as to conform to the contour of the rounded upper end of the standard, whereby the lever will be permitted to be swung freely when op erated and at the same time prevents rearward movement of the lever. The side arms 14 are further provided with fulcrum oints 16 which engage the annular flange 1 and are capable of being rocked thereon when the lever is actuated.
An integral lug 18 is carried by the inner end of the lever 12 and is adapted to pro gressively engage between the teeth 10 of the nut 9 to rotate the same as the lever is swung in a horizontal plane thereby causing the screw 4 to move in a direction in accordance with the direction in which the lever is swung.
Since the loop is located between the nut 9 and flange 17 it will be obvious that when the lever is swung slightly upwardly that the lug 18 will engage successively between the teeth 10, thereby rotating the nut to operate the screw, the outward movement of the lever being limited by the stirrup when position as shown in Figure 3 downward pressure is applied thereon to cause [the loop to rock on the fulcrum point 16, thereby causing the side arms of the loop to slidably engage the under side of the nut 9 and continued pressure upon the lever will move the stirrup to a position between the nut and upper end of the standard and at which time the lever will lie along the side of the said standard.
in the modified term of the invention the stirrup 19 is provided with a pair of lugs 20 which successfully engage between the teeth 10 when the lever is swung downwardly, or in other words the initial swinging movement of the lever is reversed to that in the preferred form.
In both forms of the invention the stirrup has its bight portion provided with an en largement 21 which is adapted to engage underthe flange 17 so that the entire jack can be lifted through the medium of the lever and placed under the part to be elevated, it being of course understood that when this is being accomplished the lever will be in a horizontal position with the lug 18, engaging with the head 10 of the nut 9. This is especially desirable since the jack can be conveniently placed at points under an automobile not readily accessible. It will be of course apparent that when this is done that the loop will first move the nut f) and its associated screw upwardly until the enlargement engages the flange, and atter the jack is placed in position for use the screw and nut will gravitate to a position to be act-uated.
lVhen the stirrup is in the position shown in Figure the nut can be rotated directly by hand for a quick adjustment oi the screw after which the power lever is actuated to rotate the nut for line adjustments.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be under stood that various changes in size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

1. A. jack of the class describeo compris ing a standard, a screw associated therewith, a nut threaded on the screw and rotatable upon the standard, a power lever including a loop and stirrup said loop being pivotally and slidably engaged with the upper end of the standard, means operable with the lever for rotating the nut to actuate the screw, said stirrup embracing the screw when the lever is in its inoperative position.
2. A jack of the class described comprising a standard, a non-rotatable screw mounted in the standard, a nut engaged with the screw and rotatable upon the upper end ot the standard, a power lever having a loop upon its inner end for pivotal engagement with the standard, said loop having a'stirrup associated therewith for engagement betw en the standard and nut when the lever is in its inoperative position, and means carried by the lever for rotating the nut to actuate the screw.
3. A jack of the class described comprising a standard, a flange formed upon the standard adjacent its upper end, a screw non-rotatably mounted in the standard, a nut threaded thereon and havingperipheral teeth, a power lever having a loop upon its inner end for pivotally engaging the standard above the flange, said loop including an angularly disposed stirrup the side arms of the loop being fulcrumed on the flange, a lug carried by the lever for progressive engagement with said teeth to rotate the nut tor actuating the screw when the lever is swung in a horizontal plane, said stirrup being adapted to be engaged between the nut and flange when the lever is disposed longitudinally with respect to the standard.

A jack comprising a standard, a screw non-rotatably mounted therein, a nut rotatable on the standard and engaged with the screw, a flange carried by the standard, apower lever having a loop upon its inner end for pivotal engagement with the stand ard, said loop having a. stirrup carried thereby and having its bight portion arranged to engage the flange when the power lever is disposed at right angles to the screw.
5. A jack comprising a standard, a screw mounted for vertical movement in the standard, a flange carried by the standard, av nut engaged with the screw and rotatable upon the upper end of the standard, said nut having peripheral teeth, a power lever including a loop for pivotally engaging the standard, said loop having a. stirrup associated therewith, a lug on the lever for successively engaging the teeth of the nut to rotate the same when the lever is swung in a. horizontal plane, said stirrup being adapted to have its bight portion engage said flange when the lug is engaged with the teeth oil the nut, whereby the jack is capable of being lifted bodily by the lever.
