Description

Dec. 11, 1923. 1,476,877
V. V. CURTIS l AUTOMOBILE JACK Filed Feb. aj 1923 Patented Dec. 1l, 1923.
VAN VINCENT CURTS, OF MOALLEN, TEXAS.
AUTOMOBILE JACK.
Application lcd February 8, 1923.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VAN V. CURTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at McAllen, in the county of Hidalgo and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Automobile Jack, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lifting jacks, and more particularly to lifting jacks especially designed for use in connection'with motor vehicles or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a quick-acting jack, whereby the article being lifted maybe moved to the desired position by a single operation of the lifting lever.
Another object of the invention is to provide a jack which will be automatically locked in its positions of adjustment.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a jack which may be folded into a small and compact article to facilitate the storing thereof and permit the same to be carried in the usual tool kit.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and inv the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.
Referring to the drawing:m
Figure l is a vertical sectional view through a jack constructed in accordance with the present invention, the operating lever being shown in dotted lines in its folded position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Figure l.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the base of the jack which is formed with a longitudinal central bore provided with threads indicated at 6.,
The jack also embodies a threaded shaft indicated at 7 adapted to move in the base, the threads of the shaft cooperating with the threads of the base to permit of an Serial No. 617,763.
adjustment .of the shaft with respect to the base to raise and lower the same.
Formed at the upper end of the shaft 7 is a head 8 which is formed with a cut out portion 9 to accommodate the ratchet bar 10 which moves therethrough, the ratchet bar being curved, as clearly shown by Figure l of the drawings and bolted to the lever 1l as at 12. A pivoted pawl is also supported between the walls of the cut out portion 9 and is designed to contact with the teeth of the ratchet bar 10 to hold the lever ll in its positions of adjustment, the pawl being such as to automatically fall to its active position.
Formed integral with the lever l1 is a depending bearing member 14 which is also disposed between the walls of the cut out portion 9 and pivotally supported on the pin 15. One end of the lever l1 extends beyond the vertical plane of the base 5 and is formed into a curved supporting surface 16, the curvature thereof conforming to the curvature of an axle to embrace a portion of an axle and prevent movement of the aXle with respect to the jack proper.
An extension handle is indicated at 17 and is hingedly connected to the lever 11 so that great leverage of the lever 10 may be had, due consideration being given to the compacting of the jack.
In the use of the device, the threaded shaft 7 is rotated, to bring the article engaging extremity 16 of the lever 11 into proximity with the article to be lifted, whereupon the lever is operated in a manner as described, with the result that the articles engaged by the portion 16 of the lever is elevated, the pawl automatically moving to lock the lever in its supporting position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A lifting jack includinga base, a threaded shaft movable through the base and having a head, said head having a cut out portion, a lever pivot-ally supported by the head, a curved ratchet bar secured to the lever and movable between the walls of the out out portion, the ratchet bar having teeth formed on the upper surface thereof, a pawl pivotally supported within the walls of the eut out portion and disposed above as my own, I have hereto affixed my signathe ratlehetf bir) said pawl Yadapted to autoture n the presence of two Witnesses. mat'ca ly a Gravity into entra ement With the ratcheis;7 ar to lock theblegver in VAN' VINCENT CURTIS' I its positions of adjustment, and said lever Witnesses: having a curved article engaging extremity. O. L. RAsH,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing R. L. GILMORE.
