Description
w HOLMES COMBINED AUTO JACK AND WHEEL FULLER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. l6, i920- Pdtented Apr. 11, 1922 v WIIjLIaM HotME's, orINIA'GAna'rALLs; oiviranm cmmnii;
7 To. all 2071 om it may concern object of the invention is to provide a double-utility tool which can be used for jacking purposes, :and which can also 'be'u'sed to remove a wheel from the iiliXlB carrying the same. 1' v r In putting my invention into practice, I make certain modifications in theconstruction of the barreliof a well-known form of jack, and mount on the jack-screw a nut which is prevented from rotation on the said screw from the fact that it conforms to the internal shape of the barrel. This nut when the tool isused for jacking purposes is locked to'the j ack screw at the lower end thereof so that the jack-screw may be raised and lowered in the -usual way Without rotation. hen the tool, is used as a wheel puller, the base thereof is adapted to co-act with the hub of the wheel and the said nut is uncoupled from the jack-screw to permit the turning of the screw in order to ultimately locate the said nut against the in ternal stop located at the upper end of the barrel. The continued rotation of the jackscrew iinthe proper direction will bring the same in contact with the axle and so exert force as to remove the wheel therefrom.
In the following specification I shall describe my preferredform of construction whereby I provide a double-utility tool of the class set forth, and whatI claim: as new Application filedscptember 16, L320 Serial No. 410,756..

It will be clear to one skilled in the art that the tool can be readily removed from the hub 11, and the nut 5 moved to the bottom of the jackscrew B so as to adapt the tool to perform the function of a jack.
The bore 5 of the upper end of the barrel Act course communicates with the bore 4, and is plane and substantially circular in cross-section.
hat I claim as my invention is:
1. A combined jack and wheel puller comprising a bore-provided barrel interiorly non circular in cross-section for the greater portion of its length and terminating at its upper end in a plane bore of smaller diameter thus forming an internal stop; an internally threaded base carried by said barrel and adapted to be clamped around the hub of a wheel; a jack-screw mounted to have longitudinal movement within said barrel; a nut adapted to fit the bore of said barrel below said stop, and adapted to be keyed to said jack-screw and located near the lower end thereof when the tool is used for lifting purposes, said nut being uncoupled from said jack-screw and moved through the rotation thereof into contact with said stop so that as said jack-screw is rotated it will be brought into contact with the axle of the wheel to be removed, and means adapted to coact with said j ackscrew to permit the same to be moved to effect the different functions of the tool according to the use thereof.
2. A wheel puller comprising a bore-provided barrel interiorly non circular in crosssection for the greater portion of its length and terminating at its upper end in a plane bore of smaller diameter thus forming an internal annular stop; an internally threaded base carried by said barrel and adapted to be clamped around the hub of a wheel; a jack-screw mounted to have longitudinal movement within said barrel; a nut adapted to fit the bore of said barrel below said stop, and threaded 011 said screw and adapted to be brought into contact with said stop through the rotation of said screw and to co-act therewith to permit said screw to ultimately be brought into contact with the axle from which a wheel is to be removed.
