To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, Oscar CAnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in separable Cuff Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of cuff button of the separable type, and has for its object to provide a button of this character comprising stud and socket members, the stud member carrying a pair of separable jaws adapted to releasably engage the other member and this stud inei'nbor is also provided with an axially movable pin operable through its outer head for controlling the engaging and releasing actions of the jaw members with the socket member.
further object of this invention is the provision of a pair of swinging jaws in the stud member which are engaged by the tapered head of the push pin member, the pin member being pressed into position by a spring to spread the jaws into locked position and this spring is arranged to also act upon the jaws to move them to closed position when released by the inward movement of the pin.
A further object of the invention is to mount a pair of jaws in the stud member adapted to be withdrawn into the stud member through an opening in the inner head of the latter member by action of a sprin pressed pin to spread these aws into engagen'ient with the inner head plate of the socket member, the releasing action being effected by manually pressing the outer end of the lock pin inwardly which end extends through the head of the stud member of the cuff button.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

It is found in the practical construction and operation of separable cuff buttons, of advantage to provide readily operable means whereby the button members are positively locked together so that they cannot be separated except by manual manipulation of the central presser pin, and to accomplish this object, I have mounted a pair of later-- ally-swinging jaws in the stud member adapted when contracted to be passed through an opening in the socket member, and I have provided an axially disposed presser pin having a tapered enlargement so arranged that when pressed inwardly it will permit a contracting action of the aw members under action of a spring, so that they may pass into engagement with the socket member and upon beingreleased this enlargement on the pin serves to spread these jaw members to engage the socket member to positively lock the two button members together, it then requires only another pressing action upon the end of the pin which extends through the head of the button to move the jaw members to release position to permit the button members to be separated; and the following is a detailed description of the present en'ibodin'ient of my invention showing one construction by which these advantageous results may be accomplished.
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the stud member and 11 the socket member of the separable button. The socket member is provided with an outer head 12 and an inner head 13, the inner head being provided with a plate 14: having a central opening 15 for the reception of a projecting locking jaw portion of the stud member 10.
The stud member is provided with an outer head 17 and an inner head 18, the inner head being provided with a plate 19 having an opening 20 therein. In this opening are mounted a pair of jaws 21 flanged at 22 which flange is adapted to set down onto the inner surface of the plate 19 about its opening 20 when in contracted or disengaged position, as best illustrated in Figure 6. These jaw members are also provided with an enlarged outer or head portion 23, the shank portion of these jaws being slightly tapering when they extend through the plate opening 20. These combined j aw are provided with rectangular slots 25 through them for the reception of the correspondin ly shaped shank 26 of the opera ing pin 2!, and this opening 25 is tapered outwardly at its lower end as at 28 to receive the correspondingly-tapered enlarged lower end 29 of the pin 27. The rectangular shape of the pin in the correspondinglyshaped bore of the jaws prevents relative rotation of these parts, but this pin may be made round with a conically-shaped head to lit in correspondingly-shaped openings in the jaws, if desired.
On this pin is mounted a washer 30 which rests upon the flanged end of the jaws and another washer 31 is secured to the outer end of this pin by the riveted-over head thereon and these two washers are pressed apart by means et' a coiled spring ihe outer end of this pin extends up into the presser cap 3% which projects through an opening 35 in the outer head 17 oi the stud member, by which construction it will be noted that when this presser cap is released the spring acts to force the pin 27 upward or outward and so spreads or separates the lower beaded or enlarged ends of the jaws into en 'agz'en'ient with the inner plate of the socket member of the button and when this presser cap is pressed inward the enlarged portion 99 of the pin releases the jaw members 21 acted upon by the lower end of the spring, hrough the washer 30 to close or swing the lower ends of these jaws into the closed position illustrated in Figure 6, and so permit these jaw ends in the stud member to freely enter or be withdrawn from the socket member of the button.

The foregoing description is directed solely tov. ds the construction illustrated but I do, re it to be understood that I reserve the privilege ot resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

A separable cull button comprising stud and socket members, separable jaws carried by said stud member having cooperating internal grooves therein, a axially-movable pin having an enlarged portion slid-able in said groove, spring means for manually caucng the enlarged portion of said pin to enage and spread said jaws to grip said icket member, and a manually operable ex ternal button having engagement with said pin "for moving the pin to permit said jaws to release their grip on said socket member.
