SEGTIUNAL COVER FOR BEGEPTACLES.
Application filed May 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Gnoncn J. ltosswonn and Lnwis VVA'rsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Cumberland, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Covers for Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in covers for receptacles and particularly to sectional covers for refuse receptacles, such as garbage cans and-the like.
An object of the invention resides in pro-- viding a sectional cover for receptacles of the type above mentioned, wherein a pair of cover sections are hingedly connected at opposite sides of the container, and provided with means for normally swinging said cover sections outwardly and downwardly against the outer sides of the receptacles, locking means being provided for cooperation with said cover sections, adapted to hold them in closed position when desired.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a sectional cover for receptacles, such as garbage cans and the like, wherein the cover sections are hingedly connected to the upper free edge of said receptacle, and normally operable by spring members carried by the hinges, to swing the cover sections to open position and retain said covers against the outer sides of the receptacle, and locking means adapted for engagement with one of said sections, which particular section is adapted to overlap the free edges of the remaining section, so that when said locking lever is engaged with the predeter mined cover section, it will retain all. of said cover sections in closed positions, a latching device being provided in connection with the locking lever, for holding the same in cover looking or closing position.
The invention also includes other objects and improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts for carrying out the invention, as particularly pointed out in the following description and claims, directed to the preferred form of the invention, it being understood, however, that various changes in the specific construction and arrangement of these parts may be made, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as described and claimed.
1924. Serial No. 716,176.
In the drawing, forminga part of this application Figure l is a side elevation 01 the upper portion of the container equipped with a cover constructed according to this invention.
Figure 2 is a partial elevational view of the container shown in Figure 1, with the cover thereon, taken at right angles to the position 01 the container in Figure 1, and showing the construction of the locking means for the cover.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the construction illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the structure shown in Figure 1, with the cover sections in closed position.
A receptacle as indicated at 1 is of the type generally used for trash receptacles and particularly garbage receptacles, and which have a beaded upper open end as indicated at 2. l i hile the receptacle illustrated is of a cylindrical form, it is to be understood that any other desired shape may be provided, in connection with which the invention is adapted to be used.
A pair of cover sections are indicated at 3 and a respectively, which are of semi-circular iorm having cooperating semi-cylindrical flanges 5, formed thereon, adapted to seat within the upper edge of the receptacle 1, while the outer edges of the sections 3 and 4:, as indicated at 6, extend over the beaded edge 2 of the receptacle, and limit the interfitting movement of the flanges 5. The adjacent edges or" the cover sections 3 and 4, are adapted to overlap as indicated at 7, and for this purpose are provided with extensions 8, at the tree edges of each section extending beyond the beaded portion 9 to provide for the proper overlapping relation of the cover section, while the remaining portions are arranged to have the flanges 6 seated on the upper edge of the receptacle 1, as illustrated.
Hinges l0 composed of hinge plates 11 and 1.2 respectively, hingedly connected together by a hinge pin 13 are formed in the central portion with a recess 14,-, in which is positioned the coil spring 15, around the hinge pin 13, the free end 16 of said coil spring being adapted for movement in opposite directions, and normally tending to move the hinge plates 11 and 12, in back to hack relation. The plates 11 are connected at their tree edges to the receptacle 1, as illustrated in Figure 3, in any suitable and desired manner, with the hinged pin in spaced. relation beyond the periphery of the receptacle, while the tree edges of the hinge plates 12 are connected at the central portions of the semi-circular edge of the respective cover sections 3 and-4, as clearly illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings. The'norinal tendency oi the spring 15,'to move the hinge plates about the pivot pin 13 normally tends to move said cover sections?) and t, to open position with respect to the receptacle and downwardly against the sides of said receptacle,
In order that the cover section may be retained in closed position, the locking means is indicated generally at 17, which includes a pair of brackets 18 mounted on the outer side of the receptacle immediately below the bead 2, and intermediate the mounting of the hinges 'iO there'on. A rocking lever 19 is pivotally connected between the brackets 18, as illustrated, and is provided with acurved end portion 20, adapted to engage the cover section 3, in a manner as illustrated in Figure 2, the end of the lever indicated at 21, to the opposite side otthe pivot of s'aid'lever from the curved end 20 being adapted to extend outwardly in angular relation with respect to the side wall of the'rec'eptacle, when the covers are held by said lever inclosed: position, so that an operation ofthe lever may be effected by pushing downwardly on the end 21, so as to move the hook 20 out of the path of 111'() .'611'l11t of the cover section, for permitting them to be moved to open position against the sides oi the receptacle. In order that the locking lever may be retained in the position shown in FigureQ, for holding said covers in closed position, a resilient member QQis provided with ollseli end portions 23, which are pivotally mounted in a pair oi spacedbrackets 2i, secured to the side walls oi the r ceptacle imn'iediately below the brackets 18, the central portion of the member 22 being adapted to engage a notch 25 formed in the lever, so that it will be retained in the position illus rated in Figure for holding the cover in closed position when the member is engaged in the notch as illust 'ated.
From the above description. it will be seen that the overlapped edge oi the cover sectiontl w'll retain the cover section 4 in closed posi ion when the locking lever 19 is engaged with said cover section, as illustratcd in Figure 2, and that when it is desired to open the same, the resilient member 22 may be forced downwardly, so as to re lease the central portion from engagement with the notch 25 of the lever, which will permit the same to be swung on its pivot to move th curved end 20 outwardly from engagement with the cover section 3, so that the springs are permitted to move said cover sections 3 and outwardly in opposite directions about the hinge pins 13 and the pivot, and downwardly against the sides or the receptacle 1, at'which time the contents of the receptacle may be dumped in a convenient in liner for'more trash or rubbish and the like be placed in the receptacle so that it may afterward be'covered by the closure oi the sections 3 and l and the lockmeans he resecured, as illustrated in y x is invention is also capable of limnent, so that it may be secured .aclcs of varying size within prelimits, in a manner which should obvious from the construction shown in tire dr ng, the flanges 6 and the extension 8 permitting ottnis limited adjustment for the various sizes of containers.
l i hat is claimed is:
l. I; corer for containers of the class described con'iprising apair of semi-circular cover sections adapted for cooperation to close the open end 01" the container, the adjacent of said sections being adapted to extend into overlapping relation, hinges said cover sections to said conhrs-{lag means for normally op- Si tions to move then: into open a locking lever n'iounted on the i adapted to engage one of said cover section for locking said sections in cooperative cover torming relation on said container.
ii. cover for receptacles ot the class described comprising a pair oi semi-ci 'cular sections adapted for cooperation to close the said sectioi'is being 'lorinedto extend in o erlapping relation, in cover forming position, hin 'es secured to said coutaiuei and said cover sections, having means for normally moving the cover sections intoopcn I with one of said cover sections, and a latching member adapt-ed or engagen'ieni with said locking lever and adapted to hol the Jan e in cover locnng relation, 'l'or holding said cover sections in closed position.
