HYMAN RosnN AND BENJAMIN SALZBURG, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
TEIMMING.
Application led July 11, 1924. Serial No. 725,363.
ToI @ZZ 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that HYMAN ROSEN and BEN- JAMIN SALZBURG, both citizens of the United States, and both residing at New York city, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimmings, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates` to trimmings or ornamental fabrics and more particularly to a trimming or an ornamented piece of Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying` drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing a conventional ornamental unit of a trimming embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the unit trimming shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is an enlarged elevational view of the separate parts of a button used in forming the trimming;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view similar to Fig. 4 showing a modified form of button fastening construction; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged plan view of a button having the modified form of fastening with a half of the cap portion removed to show the interior construction.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 1
denotes a suitable flexible fabric of such material as silk, cotton, linen or the like, on which a trimming is to be formed, one conventional ornamental unit being shown at l1 in Figs. 1 and 2. A trimming design is stamped or otherwise indicatedl on fabric 10 in the well known. manner and a series of buttons 12 are secured to said fabric 10 Vto conform with the said design to formthe trimming.
Each button 12 may be of any desired shape or size, and is shown in the drawing to comprise a circular cap portion 13 having an inturned rim 13a into which is fitted the correspondingly shaped upstanding edge 14ab of a disc'14 for securing the button 12 to the fabric 10 as will hereinafter appear.
Cap portion 13 may be formed of any suitable material that lends itself to a decorative finish, stamping, or molding as hard rubber, bone, paraline. sheet metal, or the like material, or may7 be formed of plain sheet .metal covered with an outer piece 15 of decorative fabric as shown in Figs. 8, 4 and 5.
Disc 4 is preferably stamped from sheetI metal and when formed of sheet steel it may be japanned l or galvanized to prevent rusting. In assembling the button 12 (see Figs. 3 and 4), covered cap-portion 13 is placed in position on the front side of fabric 10 and the disc 14 is pressed up into said portion 13 from the rear side of the fabric 10 thereby firmly securing the button 12 in position.
Since the buttons 12 are never subjected to pulling strains, the frictional clamp fastening means between cap portions 13 and disc 14 provide a simple, highly practical and inexpensive fastening for said buttons 12 to form the trimming.
Where the fabric 10 has a tendency to slightly wrinkle adjacent the clamp portion thereof, a modified embodiment of the in vention may be used by constructing the button fastening as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. An opening 16 is cut in the portion of the fabric enclosed in the button 12 or the threads of the fabric passing through the button 12 are severed to relieve the strain in the fabric which tend to cause wrinkling during the button fastening operation.
It will thus be seenthat there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. An article of manufacture comprising a fieXible fabric, buttons having front and rear interlocking portions, and a decorative fabric for coveringsaid front portion7 said interlocking portions arranged to clamp both said fabrics therebetween according to a predetermined ornamental design to form an ornamented material or a trimming.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a iieXible fabric and buttons having` interlocking portions for clamping the fabric therebetween according to a predetermined ornamental design to form an ornamented material or a trimming, the fabric between said button portions having openings therein to eliminate the tendency of the fabric to wrinkle.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a flexible fabric, buttons having front and rear interlocking portions, and a decorative fabricfor covering said front portion, said interlockino' portions arranged to clamp both said fabrics therebetween according to a predetermined ornamental design to form an ornamented material or a trimming, the first mentioned fabric between each set of said button portions having an opening therein to eliminate the tendencyT of said fabric to wrinkle.
4L. Av method of forming an ornamented material or a trimming of a fabric and buttons having front and rear frictional engaging portions comprising in covering each of said front portions with a decorati ve fabric and then clamping both fabrics between each set of the said portions in assembling a button and positioning` the buttons according` to a predetermined ornamental design.
5. A method of forming an ornamental material or a trimming of a fabric andv buttons having front and rear engaging portions comprising in laying out a design on the fabric for ornamentally positioning the buttons thereon, severing the threads of the fabric in the mid-portions to be covered by the buttons and clamping the said fabric portions between the button portions in assembling the buttons.
6. A method of forming an ornamented material or a trimming of a fabric, and buttons having front and rear fri-:tional engage ing portions comprising in laying out a design on the fabric for ornamentally positioning the buttons thereon, severing the threads of the fabric in the mid-portions to be covered by the buttons7 covering each of said iront portions with a decorative fabric, clamping the corcred front and rear button portions in assemblying the buttons In testimony 'whereof we affix our signatures.
