WINDOW-SASH LOCK.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a simplified, inexpensive, strong, durable, and improved sash lock that can be economically manufactured and sold at low cost, that can be conveniently and rapidly installed by the purchaser, and that can be operated conveniently and efficiently after installation to lock the sashes, to be rendered inoperative, and to prevent unlocking thereof by a burglar or intruder reaching thereto with an implement from the exterior, for the purpose of unlocking the sashes.
Another object of the invention is to provide the above lock with means whereby it may be set out of and into operative state by the more pressure upon and withdrawal of, respectively, a plunger, whereby it will remain set in its inoperative state upon said pressure of the plunger, and whereby it may be locked in its operative state by a threading manipulation ofthe same plunger.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear. 2

An upper window sash 1 and a lower window sash 2 are framed in guiding ways of the window-frame, not shown, whereby they are slidable upwardly and downwardly for opening or closing the window to any greater or lesser extent. The sash-lock 3 comprises ,a base 4 carrying a .5, which 1923. Serial No. 644,385.
is pivoted thereto by means of a rivet 6 passing through the cam and through two side-walls 7 forming part of the base. Said base comprises further a bottom wall 8, from which extend a pair of ears 9, and an upright front wall 10 having a tapped opening 11. The lock is fastened in place to the top-rail 12 of the lower window-sash 2, so that it is disposed adjacent and opposite to the upright rail 13 of the upper sash 1, and it is normally secured in its place by means of wood-screws, not shown, passing through openings 14.- in the ears 9 and threading into the rail 12. Or, if it is desired to render this look attachable and detachable, the ears 9 maybe secured, by means of machine-screws 15 to an auxiliary plate 16, Figures 1, 2, which is in turn fastened to the top-rail 12 of the lower windowsash 2. Said plate comprises ears 17, having tapped holes 18 which register with "the openings 14 for receiving said machinescrews, a downwardly projecting portion 19 at the front thereof having a tapped opening 20, and a downwardly projecting portion 21 at the rear thereof. A screw 22 threads through the opening 20 toward and away from the sash 2, whereby when it is tightened it binds forcibly the portion 21 against the sash 2 and in this manner clampingly fastens the lock in required position. If therefore it is desired to mount the lock in its place, it merely requires placing the plate 16 over the top-rail 12 and tightening the screw 22, and when it is desired to detach the lock, the screw 22 may be unthreaded and the plate 15 with the lock thereby removed. This means of rendering the lock detachable is particularly useful for demonstration purposes.
The cam 5 is provided in its rear face with a channel 23 of clove-tailed cross-sectional configuration, within which is located a rubber plate 24, the face 25 of which is curved and eccentric to the fulcrum 6, about which the cam is swingable. Normally, therefore, the cam 5 bears by its own weight against the upright rail 13 of the upper sash, and thereby securely locks the sashes 1, 2 in any position, due to the cam-surface 25 binding against the upper sash and preventing downward movement thereof, as well as preventing upward movement of the lower sash, although permitting a relative or closing movement of either of the sashes an opposite direction. To render the lock inoperative the cam 5 may be swung about its pivot 6 to the position shown in Figure 3, in which position it will be maintainedv by its own weight and permit the free shitting oil? each of the sashes upwardly or clownwardly. Should it be desired to effect a firmer initial grip of the cam 5 against the sash l anda more positive maintenance o the cam in its inoperative positionshown in Fi 3, a spring 26 may be provided which is secured at one end 2'? to the cam 5 and at its opposite end 28 to the base &. Said spring will therefore draw the cam 5 against the upper sash when the cam is in operative state, as shown in Fig. 1, and, after being stretched during the swinging of the cam away from the sash about its fulcrum, will similarly draw the cam against the apex of the wall when the cam is in its inoperative state, as shown in Fig. 3.

hould it be desired to set the lock in its inoperative state, for freely sliding the sashes for window cleaning, or for securing full ventilation, or other purposes, it merely requires pressing the plunger 29 forwardly, in a direction toward the sashes, whereupon its beads 80, portion 34, and the shoulders ot the latter will mesh with the teeth 38 and cause the cam to be disposed to its inoperative position shown in Fig. 3; and should it be desired to set the lock back to its operative state, it merely requires withdrawalot the plunger 29, whereupon the opposite action will take place and the cam 53 will be restored to the position shown in Fig. 1, in operative engagement with the upper sash 1. A sash lock having the combination of a base adapted to be secured to the lower window-sash, a cam fulcrumed on said base adapted to frictionally engage the upper sash, said base having a tapped opening, a plunger guided by said tapped opening to move longitudinally without rotation and to actuate said cam'to throw it out of it's operative state, and said plunger threading through said tapped opening and actuating said cam to lock it in its operative state by said threading action.

A sash lock having the combination of a base adapted to be secured to the lower window-sash, a cam fulcrumed on said base adapted to frictionally engage the upper sash, said base having a tapped opening, a plunger guided by said tapped opening to move longitudinally without rotation and to throw said cam into operative state, and said plunger threading through said tapped opening and actuating said cain to lock it in its operative state by said threading action.

A sash lock having the combination of a base adapted to be secured to the lower window-sash, a cam fulcruined on said base adapted to trictionally engage the upper sash, a plunger guided by said base to move longitudinally and to actuate said cam to throw it into and out of its operative state, and said plunger threading through said base and actuating said cam to lock it in its operative state by its threading action.

A sash lock having the combination of a base adapted to be secured to the lower window-sash, a cam fulcrunied on said base adapted to frictionally engage the upper sash, a plunger guided by said base to move longitudinally and to actuate said cam to throw itout of its operative state, said cam adapted to remain in inoperative state,
said plunger adapted to throw said cam from said inoperative into operative state, and said plunger threading through said base and actuating said cam to lock it in its operative state by its threading action. 10. A sash lock having the combination of a base adapted to be secured to the lower window-sasli, a cam fulcrumed on said base adapted to trictionally engage the upper sash, said base having a threaded opening, a plunger slidable longitudinally through said opening actuating said cam to throw it out of its operative state, said cam adapted to remain in inoperative state, said plunger adapted to throw said cam from said inoperative into operative state, and said plunger threading through said opening and actuating said cam to lock it in its operative state by its threading action.

A sash look having the combination of a base adapted to be secured to the lower window-sash, a cam fulcrumed on said base -adapted to frictionally engage the upper sash, said base having a threaded opening, a plunger slidable longitudinally through said opening actuating said cam to throw it out of its operative state, said cam adapted to remain in inoperative state, said plunger adapted to throw said cam from said inoperative into operative state, and said plunger threading through said opening and actuating said cam to lock it in its operative state by its threading action in a direction away from said sashes.

A sash lock having the combination of a base adapted to be secured to the lower window-sash, a cam fulcrumed on said base adapted to frictionally engage the upper sash, said base having a threaded opening, a plunger slidable longitudinally through said opening without rotation actuating said cam to throw it out of its operative state, said plunger throwing said cam into operative state, and said plunger threading through said opening and actuating said cam to lock it in its operative state by its threading action.

A sash lock having the combination of a base adapted to be secured to the lower window-sash, a cam tulcrumed on said base adapted to trictionally engage the upper sash, said cam adapted to be disposed about its fulcrum in operative and in inoperative positions, said cam adapted to be held in either of said positions by its own weight, and a plunger guided by said base to move longitudinally and to actuate said cam to throw it into either of said positions.

A sash lock having the combination of a base adapted to be secured to the lower window-sash, a cam fulcruined on said base adapted to frictionally engage the upper sash, said cam adapted to be disposed about its fulcrum in operative and in inoperative positions, said cam adapted to be held in either of said positions by its own weight, and a plunger guided by said base to move longitudinally and to throw said cam out of said inoperative position and into said operative position.

A sash lock having the combination of a base adapted to be secured to the lower window-sash, a cam fulcrumed on said base adapted to tli'ictionally engage the upper sash, said cam adapted to be disposed about its fulcrum in operative and in inoperative positions, said cam adapted to be held in either of said positions by its own weight, a plunger guided. by said base to move longitudinally and to actuate said cam to throw it out of said operative position and into inoperative position, and said plunger throwing said cam out of said inoperative position and into said operative position.
