Description
A. MILLER. Machines for Dressing and Grazing Barrels. No. I54,883;, I Patentd Sept. 8,1824.
.Attorneys.
THE GRAPHIC CO PNDTO-UTM'.19& H PARK PLAOILNY UNITED STATES PATENT OrFIoE ALFRED MILLER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES H. WATERS & 00;, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR DRESSING AND CROZING BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,883, dated September 8, 1874; application filed December 27, 1873.
CASE B. -(No. 3.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED MILLER, of Gincinnati,in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine for Dressing and Grozin g Barrels, &c; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification. V
My invention relates to improvements in machines for dressing and crozing barrels, kegs, and buckets.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of one end of the machine.
This application relates only to improvements in the clampingheads of the machine and their mode of operation, the other parts being described, and forming the subject-matter of a separate application, A, filed this day.
A represents the movable, and D the stationary, heads of the machine, between which the keg is secured. The head A is adjustable on ways 0 G, by means of a spider, B, on the shaft of pinion a, which pinion engages in a rack, I), attached to'the under side of head A. These heads consist of inclosing rings A D, within each of which is fitted to revolve loosely the ring A D, the one, D,
having a prolonged portion or band, D, within which the keg is held, and around which .the driving-band is placed. The inside edges of the rings A D are beveled inwardly, as shown at c, Fig. 2.
The operation is as follows: The head A is forced back on the ways C G by spider B. The
keg is placed in heads A and D-the head A,
by means of the rack and pinion and spider,.
is forced forward against the keg-forcing it securely within the rim or band D, and against the rim D, and holdingit in this position. Rotary motion is then communicated to the keg by the driving-band, which passes around the portion D of rimD, and the operation of chamfering, crozing, and howeling the keg proceeded with the same as in case A.
Having described myinvention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The barrel-holder herein de cz'ibed, composed of stationary frame D, adjustable head A, and the revolving chuck I), provided with the annular projecting flange D, which forms part of same, upon which the belt runs, the
parts D and l) united and held in position by a V-shaped joint, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The stationary frame D, with revolving chuck D, the latter provided with the projecting belt-flange D, and the portions D and D united by a V-shaped joint, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the stationary revolv-' ing head D D D, and adjustable head A A, and pinion and rack a b, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes described.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of December, 1873.
ALFRED MILLER.
Witnesses F. A. ROWEHAMP, B. HUESMAN.
