Description

W. A. PERKINS.
MACHINES FOR WHITENING AND BUFFING LEATHER.
Patented May 22,1877
N. PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASMNGTON. D O.
WILLIAM A. PERKINS, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR WHITENING AND BUFFl-NG LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,17 3, dated May 22, 1877; application filed March 31, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that WILLIAM A. PERKINS, of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Machine for Whitening or Bufiing Leather; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
The principal features of my invention are that I so arrange my apparatus that instead of using but one cylindrical dressing-tool I use several, and attach them to the periphery of a wheel, so that, as the wheel revolves, each in turn is brought to act upon the skin or leather laid over a yielding bed. A positive rotative movement is given to each tool independent of that imparted to it by the re volving wheel or cylinder to which it is attached.
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, of an apparatus embodying my invention.
A represents the carrying wheel or cylinder, to the periphery of which are attached the cylindrical tools B. Motion is conveyed to the carrying-wheel in any ordinary manner; but in order to drive the tools at the speed requisite to perform the work, I place loosely upon the shaft of the carrying-wheel pulleys part of the pulleys O, and from the larger part thereof to the pulley E on the tool-shaft.
The operation of my apparatus is as follows The rotation of the carrying-wheel A brings the tools consecutively into contact with the skin or leather placed over the yielding bed F, while the tools being cylindrical, and having cutting-edges, are revolved at a much greater speed by means of the pulleys D, G, and E.
I do not claim, broadly, either the cylindrical tool or'the simple attachment of a tool for dressing leather to the periphery of a wheel; but
I do claim- In a machine for whitening or dressing leather, one or more cylindrical tools attached to the periphery of a wheel, each of the cylindrical tools having a positive rotative move ment on its own axis imparted to it, and is brought into contact with the leather to be dressed by the revolution of the wheel to which it is attached, substantially as herein described.
. WM. A. PERKINS.
